Actually it is rumored that the iPhone downclocks the 1Ghz processor (like they have with every iPhone for battery life) so it might just run a little better. And the only other phones besides iPhone 4 with a capable GPU are Samsung Galaxy S series and Nokia N8. He has every right to be the cocky son of a b*tch that he is.  John Carmack is one of the founding fathers for the entire first person shooter genre. Normal bump mapping was implemented for QuakeII while ATI and nVidia were still fighting on supporting larger textures.
