The best 3G GSM carrier in the U.S. is ATT hands down. So "locking" it in is kind of a moot point as the Euro people already have their version so why would they even buy this. Also it doesn't even have TMO 3G bands so for a TMO person to buy this and pass on 3G is questionable. 3G is the only way to go IMHO. So a TMO person could buy the Euro version and use it on TMO and it won't matter because neither work on that 3G network.

I just hope HD recording and portrait orientation get enabled.

Also ATT will unlock it for you if you're traveling overseas. You may have to own it for 3 months or something but they usually will always unlock your device. Especially if you bought it outright. It's just a formality IMHO.

Also going to 2.2 instead of 2.1 is a no brainer. Actually man, the skins are definitely the issue the streak's hardware is totally capable. Most hardware for high end smartphones are pretty stock. There are the arm processors, Samsung has the Hummingbird and i believe the Streak along with newer HTC phones use the snapdragon etc. There aren't really any huge differences. All the new chips are roughly 1Ghz and most screen resolutions are fairly close. companies have to recode their skins for updates. I have no issue with it being on AT&T's 3G bands. In fact, I prefer that as I use AT&T personally, and have a data-only SIM for use in something like the Streak.

What I'm not pleased with is the fact that the contract-free, or "unlocked" price as it was referred to before launch, is just purchasing a locked Streak directly from Dell. The streak is looking better by the minute. My final concerns would be the camera portion; can we expect smooth 720p video in the future, and less compressed 5mpix pictures? It seems the iphone4 trumps the streak on both accounts so far.

I think the streak will be superior for reading web, ebooks, gps use(without paying extra..plus the screen is more fitting sizewise) and video of course. the size doesn't bother me either in terms of pocket ability. I agree. It's basically locked anyway with the bands the fact that they locked it via software is overboard. It's a slap in the face to ATT customers I'll admit. They shouldn't have done that. ATT doesn't really give a shit about it's customers they just want our money. People don't appreciate how much is involved in porting to different hardware and how different that hardware actually is. For example, though all these devices are ARM CPUs, they come from a variety of manufacturers (Qualcomm, TI, Samsung) who each have their own tweaks and specializations that you'd like the software to take advantage of. And then there are the various custom DSPs, GPUs, radios, etc. For example DSPs are used to accelerate things like media codecs, and the media system in Android has been changing significantly over the last few releases as it moves to stagefright.

Add on top of that carrier requirements (which may require changes to the UI flow for activation or phone calls), tuning of the entire system to work well with the available RAM (a process that can go on for weeks), the process of QA and carrier certifications, etc., and a couple months is the very baseline for updating to a new version of the platform.

Look, if AT&T sucks in your area then use another carrier. They are fine in the other 95% of the country. You'd think that they have this horrible network that doesn't work at all of anybody if all you read was these blogs. Now if you want to talk about poor smart phone selection (outside of the iPhone) then fine. They totally blow in that arena. At least they are finally starting to do something about that, though. They still aren't pushing Android much but they did go after WP7 and nabbed the Torch recently as well.
