The only area where HTML5 competes with Flash is concerning audio & video. Canvas w/ javascript will not replace advanced flash animation. HTML5 isn't about trying to replace Flash (the embed tag is in the spec!). Yes, most flash video should go the way the the dodo. Even Adobe would agree with that. HTML5 does video better, in some cases, than flash... except, even Google, who has embraced HTML5 completely, and who's employees even got quake to run in HTML5, still uses flash for youtube, and the flash youtube works better than the HTML5 version, with better features, annotation, and progressive streaming. I've switched youtube to HTML5 several times, and always end up going back... especially since my videos lose all of the annotations, and trying to watch a video that hasn't fully loaded and jumping around the video completely sucks in HTML5.

Forget all of the other things that HTML5 is no where NEAR challenging Flash on. So no, only in Apple land is it an "either-or" thing. Everywhere else in the world we call "the internet" you can have BOTH. You have your HTML5 page, and you embed some Flash in it when you need it.

And yes, it runs beautifully on my phone.

So yes, Flash is here, now. Maybe HTML6 will finally allow devs to abandon flash, or maybe flash will become part of the HTML6 spec. Who knows. What I know is that it's 2010, and HTML5 is nowhere near where it needs to be to remove flash... and while I'm here, in 2010, I sure as heck want my phone to support flash.

Sadly once again the Apple fanboys miss the key relevant details.

The problem is not that something is or isn't open but the fact that the choice is not. I should be at liberty to be as "tasteless" as I want. Neither Steve Jobs nor Richard Stallman should be able to tell me what I can do or what stuff I can run. When it comes to my own personal property, those decisions should rest with me alone.

The fact that an Apple device won't allow me to install the software of my own choosing or Free Software is far more significant than individual choices regarding browser plugins.

HTML5 is cool, but doesn't offer any type of copyright protection for some protected content. Steve Jobs knows this. He wants everyone to abandon the protection Flash provides, and instead use his closed content delivery systems and store so he can profit from the lack of content protection.

He also doesn't want you to use the really good web based apps like Picknik because he can't compete or profit from them either. I saw a demo on YouTube of one of the latest Droid phones running Flash. It was not running at full speed, but it kept chugging along. No doubt that eventually we will get quad-core 3 ghz snapdragons. And flash will run like on PCs.
