The iPhone and a good chunk of apps takes heavy advantage of being always on and connected to the net, uninterrupted. Pandora, Dragon Voice, all the various remote desktop and VPN clients and Mapquest turn by turn navigation, are just a few of those apps. Imagine being in the middle of an app download from the app store or using mapquest and you get a call on Verizon. Do you take the call which immediately terminates data and try redownloading later, or ignore the call. It gets super annoying having to choose.
