Week in Review: The next big thing

At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on the site and then present them all in one convenient place. Miss a big story last week? Curious about what's going on next door at our sister site, WoW Insider? Don't worry -- we've got you covered.

There's palpable relief among the people we're meeting in Trion's freshly pre-launched RIFT -- relief that the game is finally here and doing well, maybe even doing better than expected. The last few years have been rocky territory for many new AAA titles, so there's a lot of pressure on each new game to be the next big thing. With over one million players signed up and long queues forming as players scramble to log in to an ever-expanding server list, RIFT just might be pulling it off. This week, in honor of RIFT's head-start launch, we got the scoop on the last four souls, highlighted a collectors edition unboxing, and offered a guide to your very first day in the game. Happy rifting!

Join us past the break for a look at this week's other top stories.

  • Patch 4.1 PTR: Patch notes
Blizzard released patch notes for Cataclysm's first major content patch (not coincidentally, we suspect, on the day of RIFT's head-start launch). The patch will tweak interrupts, add a new Looking-for-Guild system, and adjust cast timing as well as re-release Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub as level 85 heroic dungeons.
