Addon Spotlight: Grab bag 6, the grabbiest bag

Each week, WoW Insider's Mathew McCurley brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same.

It has been quite a while since I've done an Addon Spotlight grab bag article to throw all these little baby utilities and useful addons at you. It's like Addon Christmas and I am jolly ol' Saint Addon, ready to toss presents under your interface folder. Hilarious, I know.

If you've got a recommendation for an Addon Grab bag article or an addon you want to share with the rest of the world, send your recommendations to mat@wowinsider.com with Addon Spotlight in the title. That means it won't get lost in the "buy WoW gold now" or "Mat, why aren't you answering my emails, it's your baby" filters. Recommend your favorite addons!

Show My DPS

Simple and to the point, Show My DPS shows you your DPS. Shocker, right? Slow down, Slick -- let's talk about why you might want to install this addon either as a complementary addon to Skada/Recount or just by itself.

Show My DPS simply shows you your DPS and no one else's. There is a simple interface that runs a lot less hot than one of the bulkier addons like Recount or Skada and saves no data whatsoever. This is the lightest DPS reporting addon you will find out there.

So what's the point? Why would I want a super-lightweight DPS meter when the purpose of DPS meters is to compare, gather data, and analyze that data to make better decisions later? Well, you're right. However, if you're downloading this addon or even working with any high-end DPS guild, World of Logs logs is available to you. If your computer isn't a fan of high-CPU- or high-memory-usage addons, this might be the best way for you to see your DPS and not have to have another addon running that might impact your game performance. You can always check the World of Logs later.

If you need a super-lightweight DPS meter that shows the only important DPS, you, then I'd say check out Show My DPS.

InspectFix

Sometimes all I have to do is put an addon here and you all will suddenly smile, your eyes will light up, and an exclamatory "Finally!" will leave your mouth. InspectFix is an addon that elicits such a response from people that I recommend it to.

If you haven't already noticed, inspecting someone has the occassional bug associated with it. Sometimes items just lose all their information. Other times, you'll get a completely different item when you mouse over. It's crazy! InspectFix fixes most of the issues with the default Blizzard inspection UI, including gear changing and tooltips suddenly disappearing. InspectFix also keeps the window open if you accidentally remove your target.

Fix your inspect UI with InspectFix. You'll feel good about it.

BagSync

I can't believe I haven't talked about BagSync sooner. A while back, I wanted to get the functionality of ArkInventory's "who has what in their bags" while not having to get a robust addon like Altaholic. BagSync does the job wonderfully.

BagSync tracks what items are in your bag, bank, and guild bank and adds who has what to the tooltip when you mouse over that item. It's as simple as that. If I've got 40 elementium ore in my bank and 20 on my person, the addon lets me know where the extra ore is right on the tooltip. This is great for trying to find items on alts or if you have a resource bank alt with all sorts of stuff stuck on them. Personally, I like to mail raw materials and extra gems to my bank alt, and remembering who has what just works with addons like BagSync.

For the addon to work as best as it can, you're going to want to go through and open up all of your characters' banks, mailboxes, bags, and other inventories to let the addon look at what you got for the most accurate information. The more information you let BagSync eat up, the better the experience will be. If you're an altoholic or bankaholic, you'll love BagSync. (If you're any other kind of -holic, we're here for you.)

Nostromo resources

One other thing I wanted to highlight before leaving you fine people was an awesome resource on YouTube from reader Grendalsh. His YouTube channel The 2 Ring is all about the Razer Nostromo, with how-to videos, addon configuration for the Nostromo, and much more. With new, super-secret stuff coming from Razer for the profile system and new updates to its software, resources like Grendalsh's are going to be very, very important in the future for people who love these devices. I'll leave it at that.

Many people have expressed interest in the Nostromo after my review and seeing it used in some user interfaces on Reader UI of the Week in recent months, so I hope that Grendalsh's videos can help pique interest and show you what the peripheral is capable of.

Check out Grendalsh's Nostromo videos on YouTube. They are really cool.

Addon Mailbag!

Mat,

I was wondering if you could talk about your favorite new UI feature coming with the new patch?

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks for the email, Dan. I wrote a post yesterday all about the new UI features coming in patch 4.3 that gives you a good idea of the types of quality-of-life changes that Blizzard is making to the UI. Personally, my favorite new change is the facelift of the reforging UI. I hate, hate, hate drop-down menus, and the reforging UI was a mess of drop-downs. The new button model makes it so you can more easily see your options and requires less clicks. I like it. Great iteration on an ever-better feature.

I am also partial to the whole elevation/altitude markers for your minimap targets. There is nothing more annoying than looking for something in a 3D environment (especially in Vashj'ir) and not being able to find it because something is in your way in one of many dimensions.

See you guys next week!

Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. If you're new to mods, Addons 101 will walk you through the basics; see what other players are doing at Reader UI of the Week. If there's a mod you think Addon Spotlight should take a look at, email mat@wowinsider.com.
