Addon Spotlight: Patch 4.3 news, fixes, and troublemakers

Each week, WoW Insider's Mathew McCurley brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same.

After a fairly smooth patch launch, Hour of Twilight is in full swing, with players Raid Findering and getting ready for the Darkmoon Faire. On the whole, patch 4.3 did not give us many of the UI errors and mishaps we've come to expect from a big patch such as Hour of Twilight, but there were some bumps along the road.

Most players' concerns were dealt with by clicking that magic little box, Load Out of Date Addons, found at the top right-hand corner of the addon menu at character select. By choosing to load out-of-date addons, you let the game bypass restrictions and let addons that probably don't have any problems continue running in the new patch 4.3 environment. If your game isn't loading, turn off your addons and load only a few at a time until you find the culprit. There are a few specific addons that were causing people trouble, so check them out below if you've still got some problems.

Remember, update your addons first! OK, now you can continue reading.

Addons that caused problems

There were a few addons that were giving people trouble during the patch launch, but nothing too mind-bendingly shocking. As we knew from the PTR, OmniCC was going to have issues in the beginning because Blizzard had apparently changed the way that that numbers displayed on action buttons. Since OmniCC displays your abilities' cooldowns as a number on top of the action button for the ability, this was going to be a little nasty. Luckily, mere hours after the patch was live, a fix to OmniCC was pushed out and the addon worked perfectly again.

In fact, if you were having any cooldown problems, you're going to want to update your cooldown addons to their most recent versions as soon as possible. Try grabbing an alpha release of your favorite cooldown addons and hope it's all ready to roll. Otherwise, if you haven't tried OmniCC, now's a decent chance.

SLDataText, one of my favorite addons in the history of WoW, has been a culprit of patch problems for a couple of big patches in a row. I have no idea why that there are so many hooks that SLDT gets snagged up in when new patches release. Suffice to say, it looks like it's all fixed up at this point -- so press on, heroes, and use this awesome addon once again.

Update your DBM (or raid addon of choice)

It seems like there is a new version of Deadly Boss Mods or other boss mod addons every 30 seconds. That's because there probably is! If you don't want to get spammed with the "you're out of date" messages, keep on your toes about the new updates from boss mod creators. You'll want the most up-to-date boss mods to make sure timers are consistent amongst the raid, everyone is on the same page about what abilities happen when, and of course, to give you that last line of defense when it comes to knowing what you should be doing.

If you've got an addon updater like the Curse Client, just set your raid boss addon to an alpha release and refresh once in a while. Eventually you'll be up to date and ready to roll.

ElvUI was updated to version 3

My go-to UI compilation ElvUI has been updated for patch 4.3, giving players better control over their action bars, better profile selection, up-to-date patch 4.3 addons, and more. If you're an ElvUI user, especially since a lot of compilation UIs have gone the way of the dodo after patch 4.2, you'll want to check out the new version of the compilation.

Add new mounts to GupPet

For those of us using an older version of GupPet or who haven't switched to an updated version, here's how to add the new patch 4.3 mounts to your addon. Open up the interface folder and find GupPet. Open up the file Gup_MountData with a text editor, and copy and paste in to their respective sections these lines of code. You'll see how it's done based on the other entries. Make sure to put ground mounts with ground mounts, flying with flying, and so on. You can tell which are ground mounts by their "[1]=true" syntax, followed by the mount name. That means it's ground only!

Patch 4.3 GupPet mount codes:

  • Tyrael's Charger [107203]={[1]=true,[10]=true},--Tyrael's Charger

Dragon Soul raid mounts

  • Blazing Drake [107842]={[10]=true},--Blazing Drake

  • Life-Binder's Handmaiden [107845]={[10]=true},--Life-Binder's Handmaiden

  • Experiment 12-B [110039]={[10]=true},--Experiment 12-B

  • Twilight Harbinger [107844]={[10]=true},--Twilight Harbinger

Worgen racial horses

  • Mountain Horse [103195]={[1]=true},--Mountain Horse

  • Swift Mountain Horse [103196]={[1]=true},--Swift Mountain Horse

Darkmoon Faire mounts

  • Darkmoon Dancing Bear [103081]={[1]=true},--Darkmoon Dancing Bear

  • Swift Forest Strider [102346]={[1]=true},--Swift Forest Strider

New WoW TCG mounts (coming soon)

  • Swift Shorestrider [101573]={[1]=true},--Swift Shorestrider

  • Corrupted Hippogryph [102514]={[10]=true},--Corrupted Hippogryph

  • White Riding Camel [102488]={[1]=true},--White Riding Camel

New holiday mounts

  • Swift Springstrider [102349]={[1]=true},--Swift Springstrider

We've got time for a quick Addon Mailbag, and then I'm running for the hills, so to speak. Not actual hills. Proverbial hills.

Mathew,

You probably get this question often, but I figured id ask as I couldnt find anything "recent" on the web about it. I use RealUI, and the author has stated that 4.3 will be its last update, so I will be needing to find/create a new UI from scratch soonish. I used Cosmos back in vanilla/TBC, didnt play during wrath, and have been using realUI in all of cataclysm. Any tips on what to do when that day finally comes when my ui suite is no longer being maintained? Thanks!

Very Respectfully,

Glutathione

Thank you very much for the email, Glueathione. Sadly, yes, RealUI is ending development. Nibelheim, you made a damn solid UI, buddy. Now is the time to start transitioning over to a new compilation if RealUI development isn't going to be passed on to someone else.

Like I said above, I recommend ElvUI as a replacement for many people's UI compilations that have either lapsed into inactivity or just darn broke. It looks slick, has plenty of options, and hopefully isn't too much of a departure from what you're already used to.

If you've got any questions or comments about patch 4.3 with respect to addons, put them in the comments below and hopefully myself and the community can help everyone get all settled in to patch 4.3 with no more addon problems to speak of. See you all next week.

Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. If you're new to mods, Addons 101 will walk you through the basics; see what other players are doing at Reader UI of the Week. If there's a mod you think Addon Spotlight should take a look at, email mat@wowinsider.com.
