Transmogrifying the women of DC comics
I love comics. I have a monstrous stash of comics carefully bagged, boarded, boxed and stacked in my closet. It runs in the family -- my father collected comics when he was a kid, and he has a particularly painful tale of how he collected Superman from day one. He actually owned Action Comics #1. However, when he left home and joined the military, his mother (bless her heart) decided to throw away all his old comics while cleaning house. Sometimes my dad looks at what that #1 issue sells for today, and he gets a little sick to his stomach.
However, while I do enjoy reading Marvel, I have to say I'm a DC comics girl at heart -- much to my father's dismay. Last time, we looked at ways to transmogrify characters into beloved comic book figures and tried our hand at transmogrifying looks for some of the Avengers. Well this week, it's the ladies turn. While we can't get exact replicas of many of the DC comics sets, I've tried to put together three looks here that recall some of DC comic's most heroic and devilish women.
Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is possible to recreate in a variety of different ways -- there's even a cloth helm perfect for her distinctive tiara. You can use a variety of different types of armor to get that Wonder Woman look. However, I've found that I get the best results as far as matching both colors and styles by going with a plate set.
Head It may not be a tiara with a star, but the Templar Crown makes a pretty decent plate
substitute for Wonder Woman's helm.
Shoulders Keep your eyes peeled for the Warlord's Iron-Epaulets, a random green drop from Outland mobs.
Back Wonder Woman doesn't need a cape, so you can just turn that graphic off.
Chest For the red chestplate, you're going to want to keep an eye out for the Warlord's Iron-Breastplate, a random green from mobs in Outland.
Wrists Sadly, bracers will be covered by gloves no matter which plate gloves we go with -- so the bracers here don't matter so much.
Hands Wonder Woman is well known for her silver bracers. However, we can't get away with that, because gloves are one of those required pieces of an armor set. So instead, we're going to go with silver gloves that somewhat mimic the look -- Banshee's Touch, from Baroness Anastari in Stratholme.
Waist This brilliant gold belt is the Glorious Belt, which looks suitably heroic.
Legs The Vanguard Legplates aren't perfect, because they do include leg pieces as well as the blue bikini. However, they are close enough in color and style to pass for Wonder Woman's look.
Feet Wonder Woman's got some really red boots -- pick up a pair of Bloodforged Sabatons and that ought to finish out the outfit quite nicely!
Weapon/Shield Sadly, regrettably, lamentably, World of Warcraft does not include whips of any kind, which means there's no way to get Wonder Woman's golden lasso. However, a basic sword and shield combination will work here -- I recommend a golden shield, and your standard silver sword. Personally, I like the look of the Draconian Deflector, but this is really up to personal taste!
Catwoman
Catwoman is even harder to accomplish as a transmog outfit, mainly because her headpiece is so darn distinctive and impossible to recreate, but also because there are so many different versions of Catwoman out there, guys. I decided to go with the purple and black flair of Jim Balent's version of Catwoman -- with a little twist. Partially because I have a lot of Balent's comics, but mostly because I really like any excuse to put a purple outfit together!
Head This is where the twist immediately comes into play. Because there is no real way to get a set of cat ears in game at the moment, we're going to take a bit of inspiration
from Hush and give her a pair of goggles. These are the Deathblow X11 Goggles, which require Engineering to wear. If you do not have engineering, I'd just opt to leave the helm graphic off.
Shoulders Catwoman doesn't really wear spaulders, but the Nightshade Spaulders blend in well enough to work for this look.
Back Catwoman doesn't wear a cape! Turn that cloak graphic off.
Chest Our purple leather options are limited here, but the Vest of Vengeance works well enough for this look. Farm it from Keli'dan the Breaker in the Blood Furnace.
Shirt For the shirt, you'll want a Stylish Black Shirt. This is only sold by a vendor in Stormwind, so if you're Horde, you'll need to grab a friend and transfer one over via the neutral Auction House.
Wrists Bracers will be covered by your gloves, so you don't need to worry about swapping their look.
Hands For Catwoman's long black gloves, you'll want a pair of Bandit Gloves.
Waist For the belt, grab the Shifting Sash of Midnight, which matches the purple leather perfectly.
Legs For the purple legs, you'll want a pair of Redeemed Soul Legguards, which can be crafted by a leatherworker, or a pair of Skulldugger's Leggings from the Black Stalker in Underbog.
Feet Thigh-high black leather boots aren't easy to come by -- in fact, the Bandit Boots are going to be your only option for this look.
Weapon Friends, let us take a moment to once again lament the lack of whips in WoW. Perhaps the developers could look into adding them as a weapon of some sort -- it'd make an awfully nice ranged weapon for rogues. Wait, we don't have ranged weapons in Mists. Well that's a bummer. Regardless, if you're a rogue and putting this set together, I recommend the Blade of the Unrequited from Karazhan, simply because the purple and black of the dagger goes wonderfully with the rest of the outfit. If you're a druid, a simple staff with no embellishments is a good option for this look.
Poison Ivy
I really like Poison Ivy. Like Catwoman, she's got a variety of styles and outfits -- however, Poison Ivy's always got a nature theme going. Rather than try to deliberately mush together something that wouldn't quite work, I decided to go with a really lovely set of green mail that is evocative of leaves and natural things -- and a bow that works really well with the whole look.
Head You can either keep an eye out for a Captain's Circlet, which complements the
greens of this look nicely, or just turn the helm graphic off altogether if you'd prefer that.
Shoulders The shoulders for this look are Lambent Scale Pauldrons, found on mobs in the 25-29 level range, or on your local Auction House.
Back No cloak needed, turn that graphic off!
Chest The three key pieces to this set are all from leatherworking recipes. For the chest, you'll want to put together a Green Dragonscale Breastplate.
Wrists Bracers will be covered by your gloves, so you don't need to worry about swapping their look.
Hands For gloves, you'll want a set of Green Dragonscale Gauntlets, also created by leatherworking.
Waist For the belt, you can also hit up a leatherworker -- the Nerubian Belt complements the colors of the Green Dragonscale set really well.
Legs The last piece of crafted gear you'll want to pick up are the Green Dragonscale Leggings.
Feet For boots, keep your eyes peeled for Boots of the Pathfinder. Alternatively, head back to Outland and do the quests for Shadow Labyrinth to get a set of Auchenai Boots.
Weapon The bow pictured here is a random green item if you can believe it -- the Dutiful Longbow, which drops up in Northrend. Alternatively, if your hunter happens to own a Rhok'delar, you definitely want to use that, since its blooming blossoms and delicate leaves absolutely work with every aspect of this outfit. Plus, it's Rhok'delar -- you should be transmogging that at every opportunity!
While none of these looks are as dead-on as I'd like them to be, they're still all reminiscent of the comic characters that I love. Recreating beloved comics or video game characters can be a test of patience and a lot of trial-and-error. In the end though, the only real limits are armor availability and the depths of your creativity.
