WRUP: Giant robots for the win edition

WRUP Giant robots for the win edition

I knew before going to see Pacific Rim that I was going to like it on some level. I love giant robots and kaiju films, so it promised to be good dumb fun. As it turned out, it was excellent fun, without the dumb. This is not a cerebral film, but it's a film filled with love letters to the genres that inspired it, full of homages without ever devolving into mining the past.

You can skip on 3D, because it didn't use that to great effect, but if you're even remotely interested in this film, do yourself a favor and see it. It's worth every penny you'll spend and more besides.

I can wax poetic about the film here, but WRUP is about what we're playing, not what films we're obsessing over. So past the break you'll find precisely that. You can feel free to let us know what you'll be playing over the weekend down in the comments.

Beau Hindman, F2P and Mobile Columnist

@Beau_Hindman: I'm something of a shooter nut now, moreso than I ever was before. So I'll be spending time in PlanetSide 2, Defiance, and now Firefall which looks absolutely amazing. My wife has her new gaming laptop, so we can destroy things together. Life is hard. I'll also be taking on RuneScape's Bacon Quest. It looks amazing, but the bacon jerky they sent tasted insanely bad.

Bree Royce, Editor-in-Chief

@nbrianna: I don't know where I'll be this weekend. Ultima Online lapses soon, my EVE Online freebie lapsed, and Guild Wars 2, I'm told, has in the last week devolved into a series of jumping puzzles with no way out. I know I'm going mad when World of Warcraft has started looking appealing again. Save me, Steam summer sale!

David Desi, Multimedia Contributor

@PsykopigAU: Guild Wars 2 is definitely on the menu for me this weekend, but I have been considering taking a quick trip into Star Wars: The Old Republic because of the oceanic server shutdowns. It not only reminded me of the good times I had with PVP on low ping servers, but also that I miss the game.

Eliot Lefebvre, Columnist Extraordinaire and Senior Contributing Editor

@Eliot_Lefebvre: It's the last weekend of closed testing in Final Fantasy XIV, so I'll be taking care of that. I've also got more stuff to do in Star Wars: The Old Republic before the next patch hits, and beyond that I've got a 3DS to play on. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem Awakening are better than mobile games have any right to be.

Jasmine Hruschak, Multimedia Contributor

@irljasmine: Right now my gaming world revolves around exploring Eorzea with my little archer. I'm enjoy the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn beta quite a bit so I'll be sucking up every last drop of beta goodness I possibly can. When it's time for a break from moogles and chocobos I'll be trying to figure out how my town managed to get built on top of so many fossils in Animal Crossing. Seriously, it seems like kind of a hazard.

Jef Reahard, Managing Editor and Columnist Extraordinaire

@jefreahard: I'll be playing NCAA Football 14. I know, I'm one of those guys, but look at it this way. The only place Georgia Tech is ever going to win another national championship is on someone's console, so it might as well be mine. Oh, and I discovered this incredible old racing sim called GT Legends on Steam. Best $2.49 I've ever spent.

MJ Guthrie, Columnist Extraordinaire and Contributing Editor

@MJ_Guthrie: I plan on getting the last of the guardian pets in The Secret World's anniversary event, and I won't leave until I do! I just gotta catch them all! Seriously, I only need two more (which sadly equates to many, many golem bosses). If I am really, really lucky, I might even get into Fusang for the last one. If I somehow manage to complete my set before the weekend is out, I will go weave a few songs on my Songweaver in Aion. And then most likely come back to TSW for more golems.

Richie Procopio, Multimedia Contributor

@RichieProcopio: This weekend I'll be playing Guild Wars 2. This new-fangled achievement reward system has really tweaked my OCD tendencies. I now see the game as one long achievement meter that needs to be filled all the way up. At the finish line, a hellfire helmet waits for my Norn to don it and bask in its warmth. Things just got awkward, didn't they?

Shawn Schuster, Senior Editor

@Epykbeard: I'll be playing lots of Wurm Online and some PlanetSide 2 to mix it up. I'm also loving Spartacus Legends on the Xbox and plan to play as much of that as possible. Of course, the Steam summer sale will ruin all of these plans and I'll end up playing something brand new that everyone else beat three months ago, like BioShock Infinite.

At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game -- and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
