SyFy shooter Defiance goes free-to-play next month

Defiance, Trion Worlds' console and PC MMO shooter based on a SyFy television series, is adopting a free-to-play business model next month, [A]list Daily reports.

Launched last year at retail, Defiance attracted more than one million players in its first month of operation. Though the game is not subscription-based, players can optionally purchase add-on content using in-game currency.

"We've known this transition was coming for a long time, and we've been changing the game drastically to address these issues prior to launch," producer Trick Dempsey told [A]list Daily. "Defiance was never a subscription game, so many of the issues endemic to free to play transitions were simply not an issue for us. Instead, we faced issue with gameplay balance and feelings of significant progress throughout the experience of the game. We've been tackling these issues for a year now, and it's ready to make a good first impression on a much wider audience."

The PC version of Defiance will become free-to-play on June 4. Trion Worlds will shift the PlayStation 3 edition's business model on July 15. A free-to-play Xbox 360 version is also in the works.
