The monster Apple story of the week is without question the company's $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics. While Beats is more widely known for its line of premium headphones, it was the company's streaming subscription service that piqued Apple's interest and brought them to the negotiation table.

In conjunction with Apple's acquisition, the Beats app for iOS was updated on Wednesday with a few changes that make giving the app a test drive easier than ever.

Aside from the usual round of performance enhancing bug fixes, the free trial period for the app has been extended from 7 days to 14. What's more, the annual price of the subscription service dropped down from $119.88 a year to $99.99. That translates to about $8.33 a month, making it about $1.66 cheaper than Spotify.

The release notes read:

  • We're stoked to announce that our no strings attached trial has been extended to 14 days to ensure everyone gets ample time to explore the full Beats Music experience.

  • We've dropped price of our yearly subscription to $99.99, down from $119.88.

  • To top it off, we pushed tons of bug fixes so the whole experience runs smooth as silk.

The app is free to download on iTunes, available over here.
