Discuss the WWDC keynote and announcements here!

This is the spot to discuss the WWDC 2011 keynote and the introductions of iOS 5, OS X Lion, iCloud, and whatever else Steve has planned!

Oh, and here's the stuff to add to your gdgt lists:
iOS 5: gdgt.com/apple/ios/5/
Lion: gdgt.com/apple/mac-os-x/lion/

IOS 5 will be PC free! Delta (i.e. only what's changed) over the air updates. No PC required to get going with any iOS device. Amazing stuff.

iTunes? Good riddance.

Although I am apparently the only person who actually likes iTunes. I'm just happy not having to sync through it.

Ryan, as slow and bloated as iTunes is, I unfortunately still have to say I doubt it's going anywhere. As appealing as these delta updates sound I've been stuck with an iPhone in need of a complete restore more than once or twice. I have this fear that these patchwork updates will lead to Apps (and the OS) gettings slow and buggy and needing a 'fresh' start every so often.

You know what's really going to suck now? Wireless bandwidth caps.

LOL. True! Also, I can't imagine that the telcos are gonna be happy about iMessenger (did I get that name right?)

Interesting that while WebOS and Windows Phone try integrate closest with Facebook, iOS prefers deep integration with Twitter.

A genius move I think.

I think Apple probably opted for Twitter over FB because of the simplicity of Twitter, FB is a whole ecosystem while Twitter is really only about sharing short bits of information right now.

I think ecosystem is the key word here. Apple is all about controlling their ecosystem. Twitter is complimentary; Facebook not so much. Also, while it is probably reading too much into the situation, Facebook chose to align itself with Microsoft; that may have pushed Apple in the direction of someone else.

Does anybody think there's any validity to that screen shot from TechCrunch with the new notification system with the Twitter thing at the top. That would be awesome.

I'm hoping that this is implemented. Notifications are the sole reason I switched away from iOS. And I am also a huge fan of Twitter. It'd be a double win for me.

iOS 5 is looking great. Notifications Center, Twitter integration, and Newsstand announced so far.

Interesting that Apple baked deep Twitter support into iOS 5, but not the far more popular Facebook. Not that I'm complaining!

Oh snap, the new camera stuff looks amazing. Lock screen camera shortcut, volume button can now be used as shutter, and in-device photo editing. This is great stuff.

Newsstand is a nice feature as well. There definitely needed to be some organization between all the subscriptions.

Wonder what this means for Zinio? I can't imagine that it is going to be a good thing.

Good god this is a massive update to iOS.

Are you doing a liveblog?

No, we're not a blog and so aren't going to be liveblogging anything.

That's too bad. Your live coverage was always better than everyone else's.

Agreed, gdgt's live coverage was always ahead of its competition. Sad to see it not happening anymore.

You guys have done a bunch of live-blogs here on gdgt, and they've usually been the best out there!

We did, but in retrospect it was a mistake since it really confused people about what we were trying to do with the site. We've worked hard to make things a lot clearer with gdgt 2.0, and the good news is that it seems to be working.

This forum is providing a new type of liveblog experience. While I'll miss yours and Ryan's liveblogging on gdgt, this type of communication is pretty novel.

Really liked your liveblogs of these events but I understand your stance.

Thanks, fortunately there is no lack of sites liveblogging today.

Sad, it was the best live coverage for WWDC 2009 and 2010. Will really miss it!

Man I hope they really come with it on the iCloud!

Are we all using Engadget for this, or has anyone found a better liveblog?

I'm using Engadget. They're usually the best around at this stuff.

I'm using both live.thisismynext.com/Event/Live_from_WWDC_2011 and www.macrumorslive.com/ Both are pretty snappy

I'll admit. I'm not really sold on multi-touch gestures for shortcuts just yet. I can barely keep track of the thousands of different keyboard short cuts I need for different apps.

Agree 100%
I can't stand the gesture on the mighty mouse for game play. I"m trying to keep a static distance 3rd person shooters but I keep zooming in and out. Not very functional.

Watching the livestream it looks slick though.

Lion Mail is looking amazing, I can't wait. I've been running Apple Mail for years (more recently in three vertical pane with a plugin), and this update addresses many of my complaints with it, like sucky search and a cramped, unorganized view. Stoked!

4GB download, only in the Mac App store, $29 and no reboot?! What?? Crazy!

Yet this "Snow Leopard Font Update" requires a reboot.

Yeah, and apparently no way for businesses to download and update multiple machines without killing their bandwidth. It's all as I predicted in that other thread about this topic.

Yeah. This is not going to play well with any business larger than a Mom & Pop. Apple must have another idea that hasn't been announced yet. Hmmm. Wonder if this is intended to push that relationship with the business specialists at the local Apple Store?

Tap the volume button to take a photo? We were told that was wrong wrong wrong for so long.

Yeah and they pulled apps from the store for it too. I guess the rules don't apply to them, though. Business as usual.

We weren't told that was wrong, Tap Tap Tap was just told they couldn't include it in Camera+ as an easter egg and in doing so violate the Dev agreement they agreed to when signing up to publish an App through the App Store.

Heh. BBM is over.

That, I think, was the biggest news of the night. While iCloud and its features have a lotta utility for a lotta people, the BBM competition is what's really going to get more people to jump the fence. I know a *LOT* of people who really like the iPhone but can't bear to leave BBM.
