XBMC = the awesome

Seconded. I have three original Xboxes in my house, all streaming movies, music, pictures from my NAS and Internet video from Hulu, Netflix, etc (via PlayOn). I also use the NaviX script to subscribe to video RSS feeds like Tekzilla and Cranky Geeks.

Same here. What movie codec and container you use for your XBMC?

How do you get Hulu on you XMBC? I tired a pulg-in a while back and it didnt work.

@JayUnt:

I use PlayOn. It's a program that you load on your PC and sits on the system tray. It starts a UPnP server that logs you into your Hulu, Netflix and even Amazon accounts. The new version also pulls media from UPnP sources on your LAN, but I haven't tried it.

On XBMC, when adding a new network location, you select "UPnP Server" and it will find your PlayOn that's running on your PC. It will then pull in Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, as well as CBS and ESPN. It's pretty amazing, I mean, you can watch the entire original Star Trek series on the CBS feed. It's great.

PlayOn: www.themediamall.com/playon
It's decodes video streams on a PC and redirects them to UPnP-enabled devices, like XBMC. It's not free, but it's worth it.

hulu complained and now you cant. till someone writes a new plugin at least.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the XBMC plugin because I just watched Hulu via PlayOn on XBMC.

By going through Playon to get to hulu you arent running a script to get to hulu directly through XBMC, your pc is the middleman. It works but it is very different.

I use a similar setup with Tversity, full UPnP frontend and it indexes my rss feeds for Revision3 shows.

I stream DVD ISOs. No compression. I do have some children movies that I encoded on MP4 from VHS.

concur. I have two running XBMC, and while ti can not handle some higher quality HD, I am not ready to fork out the $ for a system that can run boxee.

Have you tried the iPhone remote app for XBMC yet? I was wondering about the community thought

Boxee ftw, much?

Would be nice if Boxee ran on the original Xbox, but I think they said that isn't gonna happen, because of hardware limitations.

do you still need to get splinter cell or mech assault or whatever? and do you need that USB dongle?
0 like dislike
beezn

yes, you still need either of those games and a way to get the gamesave off your computer to the xbox, either through a modified memory unit or a Madcatz / Action Replay usb cable.

Actually, there's an audio hack that you can do, but you'll need to hot-swap drives with a running desktop. www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=205525640...

I have to say that XBMC is still one of the most awesome things I have ever had running in my house, it never ceases to amaze me just how versatile and easy to use it is. If only it played mkv it would be the media center of choice around here forever!!

it can play .MKV, what is the file size of the media you can't play? does it say it's 720p?

Agreed, I use xbmc on my old mythbox (full pc, silverstone htpc box, etc) and I'm looking at turning a rescued xbox into a remote terminal upstairs. :)

FYI there is a difference between soft-modding and hard-modding.

Soft-modding with XBMC is the simplest and easiest way by using a game (such as Mech Assault) to loop hole the console.

Hard-modding is actually soldering a chip in the motherboard.

You can hard mod the console with out soldering a chip. It's just a Philips screw and it's pretty simple. I modded a few of mine that way.

Mine was a softmod, I really don't see much of a point in modchipping an original xbox as who would use xbox live on it now anyway when the 360 is so affordable.

Btw, you dont actually need the games and usb dongle to softmod it. It can also be done with an extra PC. You just switch the IDE cable from the xbox to your pc while the pc is on and loading from a livecd especially made for softmodding your xbox, and while the xbox is loading. I can provide more info if anyone is interested, but it is a bit risky, and you can always find anything you need at xbox-scene.com where i found out how to mod my xbox.

just for the record, i've done this like 4 times and nothing broke :)

Man, I remeber killing loads of time modding my XBOX, wish I still had it. Once you have kids, those fun days come to a halt with a quickness.

I am jealous of all you bithces!

So I've used my Xbox for this purpose for a long time now and I think the real replacement for it has finally come around...ION. Nvidia and Intel have dropped this board on us and you can get and entire build put together for around $300. May sound like a lot until you realize that you're getting a machine that has built in wireless n, HDMI out, optical out, and all standard PC capabilties. That and you can load XBMC or Boxee or whatever you want on it. It may be a little more expensive, but you end up with more capabilties (wifi and HD abilities) and something a lot more attractive in the living room.

@hatch,

Yep. I do have my eye on ION. The trick would be finding the perfect remote or gyroscopic mouse, I suppose.

Man I have been so lazy / unsettled about doing this but there's no excuse for having a perfectly good XB collecting dust over in the entertainment center.

How long would you say the softmod takes?

Modded mine too, but its collecting dust now, unfortunately...

It only took me 2-3 hours, just because I was making a DIY memory card and I couldn't get the stupid wire to stay :/ Also replaced the 8gb HDD with a 40GB HDD :D Then I started streaming movies to my xbox from Stage6, I miss that site! I also set up ftp to transfer files XD

I read part of the manual on that website, but i can't find where mech assault comes in. I get how you can mod an xbox through Mech Assault, but is this website a whole different way to go about softmodding?

Well I took the easy road and bought a premodded 1st gen xbox back in the day when it was all the rage. My XBMC is way out dated now though I need to upgrade it. It's been a great little computer though.

I might just pick one up from a pawn shop. I have an old HDD sitting around that could get some use, and they're pretty cheap.
