Missing Features

I have the original 60GB PS3 and from what I have read, the new slim is missing the following:

- 2 USB Ports
- Flash Card Readers
- SACD support
- PlayStation 2 Backwards Compatibility
- OS Installation Support

Does anybody know of any other notable features missing from the original 60GB?

That's so weird, why would they leave all of that out? I don't remember the PS2 Slim wasn't missing that much from the original model.

The only feature different from the current 80GB sku is the other OS and SACD (Not sure on the SACD), the other "quote" missing items were only available on launch sku's (PS2 backwards compat.: 60GB, 20GB, 4 usb port 80GB) and the "premium" (translation: more expensive sku's: 60GB, 4 usb port 80GB, 120GB and 160GB). All but the 160GB is confirmed no longer being made, Sony stated they might still be making those but I would doubt it. Especially if the cost to manufacture is so much higher.

So really, not much is different from the current selection.

True it's not much different from the current SKU, but the trend of removing features from their flagship product is what bothers me. It's like they are going backwards in a way.

Don't know about missing features from the original but it could have done better by including an Infra-red receiver because honestly its marketed as a media device and I know some people would have loved to use a harmony/universal remote.

the flash card reader is a bit of a disappointment as most people have asome use for them but in the end I do have an external flash reader and it reads them perfectly fine but having said that it would have been nice to have included more usb ports.

do many people even have the need for SACD even though it was created by sony, i just dont know if this is such a big issue...

hopefully ps2 compatibility could be re-introduced via software? would be nice

hopefully its at least as quiet or quieter than the original ps3 and runs more efficiently and cooler. the original is a bit of energy user.

Me and Kidoro are the only people that care about SACD I think. I recently bought the Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon SACD and played it on my 20GB PS3... Sadly, the music industrys DRM hammer quickly came down upon me. I quickly noticed the newly mastered HD "surround sound" mix was only coming out of 2 channels. The RIAA was upset at me for having the audacity to try to listen to HD audio using a fiber optic digital connection as opposed to streaming through HDMI...

may your record sales decrease ten fold...

(not a bandwidth issue, a copyright issue)

The SACD is a nice feature, I am not sure how much money Sony actually saves by removing it. But by removing it, it screws people that want to replace an older DVD player that has SACD support. Now you have to keep the old unit and the PS3... the slim PS3 is smaller but not small enough to offset the size of anything that has SACD support.

Its just bogus... I don't buy that they are saving jack off of dropping this or dropping the Emotion Engines... they still mass produce them for the PS2's so this is just a cheap excuse to be lazy again. The PS3 was supposed to be the flagship Sony product and show all of their technologies - blu-ray, SACD, the Cell, hardware integration. But they failed. They've stripped it down to a very basic machine but thats all everyone at my work has been asking for and now they are all happy...

here's to simplicity...

I was hoping for a rear USB port... why did they drop this to begin with? I have one miniUSB-B cable plugged into this, and I hate that I have to plug it into the front (I have the current 80GB production model, I was a late adopter)... it throws off my entertainment center Chi... even the 360 and Wii still have USB in the back, and if you have the Sony Eye, this should be plugged into the back...

missing feature the spiderman font....... haha j/k im kinda glad that's gone :P

yeah inoxdragoon. I agree some back usb ports would have done nicely.

Back ports would definitely be nice, I have the GunCon3 and Driving Force Pro which are always plugged in to my PS3. I also use external USB storage sometimes, so if I got the PS3 Slim, I would have to have a USB hub plugged into the front also.

No PS3 units have rear USB ports.

I don't think any of those things are really big issues...It would've been nice to see them (re)introduce some of those features, but with the price cut, I'm not going to complain.

Also, according to ArsTechnica ( arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/08/sony-answers-o... ) we should probably stop clamoring for back compat anyway.

I agree it's not a much as an issue to people that do not have the original PS3, but people owning the original PS3 that were looking forward to an upgrade will actually be getting a downgrade or we have to keep both.

man he was really harsh with those statements - he just dashed peoples hopes and lost some sales - wonder if its b.s. anyway...

(cynic in me says they'll bring back ps2 bc when the ps2 is finally discontinued...)

I actually agree, why would they put emulation support in the ps3 that would ruin their number one selling console.

I think Sony's reason for permanently removing the PS2 backwards comparability is because they plan on selling the PS2 for a while longer and want to make people buy both the PS2 and PS3 Slim. It's pretty clever in terms of a strategy to keep a 9 year old console in production a selling.

It is actually quite clever since the ps2 is still beating the ps3 in sales.

I forgot to mention that there have been indications that the PS3 slim is too slim to stand vertically by itself. Once again, very clever Sony. Now there is a need for an expensive vertical stand accessory.

$24... thats 8% cost of the Slim.... those evil geniuses

He showed it standing in the unboxing, but I wouldn't want to do that. I was scared enough when I used to stand the fat one up...

I hear conspiracy theories for all of these consoles that stand up that one way is better than the other. I regularly use them flat, standing, whatever is more convenient when I take them somewhere or put them in a new setup with no problems. I think all that standing vs laying down talk is bogus.

That being said, without a stand the PS3 Short would get blown over... maybe by the 360's fans!! That would be an awesome case of irony...

Well, the one only bad thing for standing it vertically is if it gets knocked over... I agree all those other theories about air flow and what's better for the unit is bogus. It's just a matter of preference and how you have your setup,

I only pointed it so that nobody gets a surprise if they want to stand it vertically and ended up needing to fork over more cash for a piece of cheap plastic.

And I did hear you shouldn't stand any system on carpet because the angle can be off and it can wobble and ruin the laser/disc...

Well that could be true for any entertainment center, if its not built right.

True, somebody should sell a gyro stabilized console stand for carpet and poorly built entertainment centres.

lol - iPhone's greatest tool according to the commercials! Just for comparisons sake, they do have a level app for android right?

That they do, and a compass before the iphone did, used it to position my illiterate.

A level would only allow you to make sure your console is level, the gyro stabilization would be to keep the console level even if the surface it was placed on was disturbed.

Ok, i gotcha, I was talking about when putting together said entertainment center but i see where you are coming from. That would actually be really badass, although the market for it would be slim.

Its all a moot point. DON'T PUT A CONSOLE STANDING VERTICALLY ON THE CARPET....

or an the edge of your entertainment center either...

Or balancing ontop o a 200lb dog, well i didn't actually try that but the thought came to mind.

lol YES, no doing what ^^^ said either!! Keep it out of the kangaroo pouch also... and no, the PS3 Slim is not a small table to put drink on either...

Actually i have tried balancing my 360 ontop of an old CRT tv, that didn't last long.

Its missing the feature of being way heavier than the 360! I always looked at that as a point of pride!

I just assumed the Cell was really heavy!!

Actually that thing is tiny, i am very surprised at how small it is.

coologuy1957

Man, lifting up my original 20GB PS3 is like lifting a cinder block! The 360 is light enough, just the console, until you factor in that ridiculous power supply with fan they call a power adapter....

deinfinityx

True, i think i was discussing the power block of some other discussion, but yes the power black was massive.

coologuy1957

on the unboxing video, they said it just had a power cord, no little power brick even which is awesome!

so I guess a missing feature is:

a small power adapter or

a large 360 type power brick
