New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Dust off the Wii!!

I know everyone is hooked on Call of Duty and Borderlands right now, but this new Mario game is really fun too!! I played it with my girlfriend last night, then with my gf and a roommate, and finally with my gf and 2 roommates for 4-person co-op mayhem!! (something neither CoD, Borderlands, or Halo can offer on one console btw) As my roommate pointed out, this may be the only game that adding more people makes it way harder to finish a level rather than it normally would be. Thats because there are many power-ups and coins to be shared/stolen and a ton of enemies and obstacles to dodge, including each other!! You can jump on each other and pick each other up, but there is no easy way to get everyone across when jumping from small platform to small platform unless you sync up well. Still, there is lots of fun to be had.

It has the same world map layout as Super Mario 3 and all of the same features as SMW, including Yoshis, secret exits, Mario's spin attack, and the butt stomp (ground pound) from Mario 64! Its the same timeless Mario music and updated visuals which I felt looked perfectly fine running through composite (not component) cables and blown up on a 50" plasma display. I never thought "this game is ugly" or "I'm ashamed to have this non-HD game on my TV". Possibly, because I couldn't get the smile off my face...

Yay! Mario's back!!

also, to be fair, I am also hooked on CoD: MW2 at the moment and played spec ops with my gf for a couple of hours and then multiplayer by myself for about five hours or so saturday night..... Mario dominated my sunday though.....

also also, NSMB Wii is hard!! Don't expect this game to coddle you... Getting every star coin is going to be very challenging indeed...

It took me and my gf about an hour just to get through world 1!!!

My Wii broke at precisely the wrong time! I can't wait to get it back from Nintendo so I can finally throw NSMBW in.

Thanks for the review!

sorry about your wii... I didn't even know they broke (I guess the 360 steals that "spotlight") This is definitely one of those classic games I will be playing for years to come!

Wii's don't usually break, but with a two year-old in the house who has figured out how to eject and reinsert game discs, it was getting abused.

sadly, the IGN review said CoD MW Reflex is just a port of CoD 4 and a bad one at that.... the frame rate dips so frequently it becomes uncontrollable.. I've been playing MW2 on the 360 and its amazing. I'm sad wii-lovers can't enjoy the same experience....

Yeah, you'd think the Wii would be perfect for shooters, the best experiences I've had were RE4 and HotD: Overkill.

I still need to buy MP Trilogy though, and along with NSMB, my xmas holiday will be awesome! I am graduating in December (I live in Australia) so it'll probably be my last carefree holiday :( Gotta make the most of it!

The Game is truly awesome... 4 player on same screen is cool an it looks well thought out. Makes me wanna buy a Wii for my GF apt.

Please buy and tell your friends about this game! It is one of the highest quality products Nintendo has made for the Wii in a while and it needs your support! I really don't think they have been marketing it enough as lots of people haven't even heard of it. I don't want it to get lost in the CoD and Assassin's Creed mania! This is a fun single player game with 4 person local multiplayer for co-op and versus! In that aspect, none of these other games can touch it!

*sigh* its so good to finally have 2D Mario back!!

I haven't played it much yet but it is pretty fun.

the fun factor goes up the more people you add too!! (you can have 4 people playing at a time!)

hint: if you hit the big "A" button, you or your friends can put themselves in a bubble and float safely while you pass a tricky area. it is absolutely necessary for the harder parts! :)

i've been playing the new SMB only by myself. it's so difficult at times. i'm currently at world 6-5 (i think).

true. I was worried it would be too easy and watered down for the Wii crowd... big mistake!! this game is hard and being able to interrupt/bump fellow players only makes it harder with more people! great fun though... I want to finish it before ranking it against other 2D mario games, but it is definitely up there...

ok, without resorting to hyperbole, Super Mario Galaxy may be the best game in the universe!!!

sorry, I failed...

It may be the best game on the Wii though... I truly loved it and it has great gameplay, beautiful graphics, and a wonderful score. it is a complete game and, although I beat it, there is still about 10 hours of gameplay left! there is simply so much game to play! lots of stars to collect and therefore great replay value.

even after all of this time, it may have the best wii graphics! I would buy it cheap and beat it before Super Mario Galaxy 2 comes out! There will be a direct sequel to this game and the bar will, I'm sure, be raised again!

also, how are the graphics on world at war and how is the online? I have only played CoD on the 360 before... was curious how it played on the wii.. how about the controls?

sorry to hijack this thread. that being said....
the graphics on CoD aren't the greatest (though i've never played it another system) but they're good enough. i was so immersed in the campaign that i didn't notice the graphics too much. i think the online part is pretty fun actually. i was a bit skeptical but i could see myself playing it for quite a while. there seems to always be a game to join (currently just playing free for all, not the team options). i only had one situation in 2 hours yesterday where i lost my connection or the game play seemed janky.

the controls: probably the hardest thing to get used to. i have only played CoD with the wii zapper. after about 5 minutes, maybe 10, i was comfortable with it. but the difference in control comfort is huge going from the campaign to online. you have to be a lot quicker online. i'm definitely hooked on it though. i'd like to check out modern warfare later.

no need to apologize... these threads go all over the place all the time and its no big deal. we're here (on the wii page) to talk about games and all wii-related stuff... 2D Mario, 3D Mario, and Call of Duty are all fair game....

the only game like CoD I have played on the Wii is Metal of Honor Heroes 2. The campaign was definitely fun and controlled tightly and looked great. The online play was very weak though - the graphics took a huge dip and the characters looked like they were floating around and pixelated. I still want to go back and beat it though because it was very fun. (I also love Medal of Honor 1 & 2 on the PSP - great solid shooters with awesome portable online modes!)

i didn't really notice that with the online play. i did notice one thing though: either my shooting got worse in online play or it's less accurate. it might be a combination of the two. there were a few times online where the game lagged but some of that could be attributed to me downloading torrents while playing wii online. i probably need to adjust my wireless router.

I tried it, and got bored of it rather quickly. Graphics are outdated. Online play is trash due to wifi. Only good for children who have addictive personalities. Also, why 2 toads? Why not Wario & Waluigi?

if you like old 2D mario games, you will like this game... the graphics look well enough over regular RCA cables (R/W/Y) on my plasma that I'm not complaining... they look better than any 2D mario has ever before... the way the levels zoom in and out for all the people to stay in frame is pretty sweet too (and totally stolen from LittleBigPlanet but who cares). It has all of the best music from older Mario games... it really just is a "best of" Mario compilation... and its challenging! try finding all the stars in every level.... and there is no online play whatsoever so I wonder if you are thinking of a different game...

if you got bored, you obviously either don't like mario games or weren't playing with more people... the game has been hit whenever I've had two or more people on it.. fighting for kills and stealing power ups, not to mention picking up mario and throwing him at enemies!!! 4 people scurrying around on yoshis for christs sake! easily the best Wii game in a long time......

i think he was referring to CoD. i'm not an intense gamer so i'm happy with CoD on the wii. i'm sure it's way better on ps3/xbox 360 but i'm never buying one of those systems. different strokes yo.
