Of the '1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die' how many have you played?

So the other day I was walking through an Urban Outfitters (I know, I know, ugh) and I spotted Tony Mott's 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die (published in 2010) on a table. I've seen this book before and I've always been a bit curious, especially in tallying which games on the list I've played. Now, I'm not going to buy a book just to satisfy a minor flash of curiosity, and my local library system doesn't seem to have it (I might check ILL later), so I went searching around to see if there exists just a pure list of the games in the book, and yes, there is!

There's also a list challenge here: www.listchallenges.com/1001-video-games-you-must-p...

Now, it looks like that I've played about 120 of the games on the list. Of course, there are inaccuracies to be had -- how much do I have to have played for it to count? Do demos count? Which version did I play? And for some, it was so long ago, I'm not even sure if I played it or just watched someone else play it.

I'm not going to post my full list, but just a sampling of stuff I know for sure:
  • The 7th Guest
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Defender of the Crown
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy X
  • Guitar Hero
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • NetHack
  • Pilotwings
  • Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
  • Portal
  • Sam & Max Hit the Road
  • The Sims
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Tetris
  • Xenogears
Now, the list is far from perfect -- seriously, Suikoden III instead of Suikoden II? -- but it's certainly an interesting sample. Which games have you played on the list? And which games aren't on the list do you think should be on the list? (Also, keeping in mind that it was published in 2010, which games from 2011-2014 do you think might be worthy?)

I got 496, but I've been at this a very long time.

Sad to see that it misses Adventure on the 2600, though H.E.R.O. is on there. And what about Pitfall or Pitfall II (for get that Mayan Adventure crap).

I do like the list. It's more than just "this game is great to play", it also includes some that were very different and unique for their time.

I got a 173 out of the 999 listed games. Some of these I have no interest in ever playing though and some that I'd like to play (Earthbound) I probably never will.

I am most impressed because it has Zack & Wiki on there which is a game I will never stop championing as one of the best games on the Wii no one ever played.

Same way I feel about seeing stuff like Little King's Story on there. At least they tried for a good representation.

Okay, to answer my own questions, especially keeping in mind that these are games you should play before you die, and not necessarily the best of all-time:

As stated before, I'd probably swap out Suikoden III for Suikoden II, which is just the better game, and Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire for Emerald and Diamond and Pearl for Platinum. I also think it could do with a little less Metal Gear Solid (maybe just the first two or three, and leave off the rest), Legend of Zelda (nix Twilight Princess, for one), Guitar Hero (just pick one), Rock Band (ditto) and the Grand Theft Auto IV expansion packs. I'd also remove Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II.

In terms of games that have come out since the list was made, I'd definitely add Portal 2, The Walking Dead and Papers, Please. Personally I'd also like to see Catherine on the list. And I would swap about Animal Crossing: Wild World for Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The only older game I can think of right now that I'd put on the list is Boktai, which is definitely one of those "great games that no one played."

I got 153 out of the 999

I think there were some really questionable games in the list. Beatles Rock Band? Sure I've played it. Should it be on this list? Probably not

Agreed. The point of lists like this (1001 books, 1001 movies, 1001 albums) is to establish yourself as a diverse, well-informed media consumer, and I don't see how playing four Guitar Hero games and three Rock Band games really achieves that.

Same could be said for all the GTA and FF they included too

See my response below.

I'd definitely prune FFVIII and FFIX from the list, though.

194! But they seem to include some ridiculous stuff, as well as some add-ons and DLC type of things. Is there any sort of DLC that's been so amazing that you "must play it before you die?" I don't really think so.

Plus, automatically playing anything with "Civilization" or "Sim City" in the title is good for about 10 points right there.

I also play a lot of games I guess.

Wow... 338, I need to be more productive with my life. Amazing how some titles made this list, and how some classics that I still play to this day didn't.

A number of questionable picks and omissions here, but it's not a bad list. I managed to score 168 despite being on gaming hiatus between the PS1 era and the XBox era.

84, mostly the classic arcade titles. I never had a Nintendo. Actually the only consoles I've ever had we're the Atari 2600 & 5200. From there I moved on the the Amiga world, then to PC gaming. I really don't like playing on consoles, the controllers are all too small for my hands, and I'm so used to using a keyboard & moust a console controller is just plain awkward for me. To each their own, it's really a personal taste thing.

I was surprised to see 'I, Robot' on that list. Back in the day that was a game you to had to go well out of your way to find an arcade that had it. It's was pretty cool, one of the earliest games with 3D graphics.

What about Postal 2? Now there's a "must play" title right there.
