Okay, so I was about to buy the Astro Gaming A40 Wireless System (a.k.a.
A lot of people says the Astro A40 are the best gaming headset ever created, and that they so superior than the Turtle Beach X41. Then there's the people that says you should get the Turtle Beach X41 cause they have 7.1 Surround, a way better bass, and are cheaper (and wireless, but that is no longer a problem).
Is there really a noticeable diference between Surround and simulated/virtual Surround?
So, what do the gdgt community think?
Also, I read somewhere that the X41 are Xbox only, is that true?
In my experience, I don't think discrete vs. virtual surround is really an issue. Having played a lot of competitive FPS online, I don't think there's any disadvantage there -- whereas on the other hand there's a huge competitive disadvantage to not having a gaming headset (especially in the significant other department).
For me, first and foremost I'd go with what's more comfortable and has a higher build quality, and Astro A40s have the lockdown there. You have to deal with being tethered, but to a certain extent that's unavoidable due to the mic connection to the Xbox controller. (Astro also now makes a wireless connection kit, which is nice.) The TBs are also surprisingly cheap and plasticy feeling, and the cups rest on the ear, not over the ear, making them uncomfortable during longer gaming sessions.
Finally, no, the X41s are not Xbox only -- they have optical in like the rest, meaning pretty much any home theater device can output sound to them.
recently saw the Razer Chimera thats due out in April but the only info on those is just the propaganda no hands on reviews and the like so i may just wait another minute and hopefully something will pop
Wireless is defintely the way to go.
I ended up settling on the Astro wireless mixamp, which is excellent and has none of the interference that I experienced pretty regularly on the X41s. Instead of Astro's headsets, I use Sennheisers PC360, which is a well-build headset with built-in mic. It's a great combo and something to consider.
I'll keep looking on the eBay of my country for any good offer (most of them are $400+ dollars!). But now I'm also considering on getting another headset instead, since I'll be at the US later this month. Should I get the X41 then? Or are there any other options that match the quality and comfort of the Astros?
