Push Notifications?

What are your thoughts on Push Notifications? I've only seen a couple apps that use them and so far its just things like IM, news alerts, and game challenges. Personally, I'm a little underwhelmed. Do you think they compare to the multitasking of the Pre?

I think Push notifications will be much better in the long run. I jailbroke my original 3G phone for the multi-tasking ability, and believe me, I absolutely loved the fact that I can reply to a text while in the middle of another app or even from the locked screen. However, I un-jailbroke it within a couple weeks, because the phone became so sluggish. I don't know much slower the Pre is with multi-tasking but I think Push apps will do just fine. We just need to see more of them in the app store. Have you tried TextPlus - free text and push Notifications.

Pre apps are also not native, just web stuff with some hardware hooks..., can't be as intensive as an iPhone app, right?

Apps that push can use well, work amazing. Like, instant messaging for example. There is no need to have an IM app "open" and "running" constantly 24 hours a day, when I only use it for 1-2 minutes to send a few messages sporadically throughout the day. The battery saving capability alone is for totally worth it.

That being said, it's not the end all be all solution..., particularly in Apple's implementation. There isn't a, message receptacle where they all hang out..., they all have to be popovers (unless you turn them off, but that defeats the purpose), and hitting "ignore" deletes the badge notification too. The iPhone needs a "shade," like the Android, where all the messages can exist. That or, a Pre like notification system.

Beyond that, it doesn't work for games, or music apps like Pandora where background apps would be extremely useful. Get a text while playing Hero of Sparta? Can't reply until you beat the level. Major drag.

I wish apple would let music and email/messaging apps work in the background but news and sports apps are perfect for push notification and I would hate to waste all my battery on an email client.

Ya, I totally agree. Having to quit what you're doing to answer like 2 lines of a text totally sucks. Besides that everything else can work well with just push. And Apple has always given their apps special privledges, like the iPod works in the background and I know that's a no brianer, but still... I wish they'd add it for at least texting. All they'd have to do is allow a little icon on the home screen to show an app is still running. I really only ever want two apps and maybe music at once

So over a month into 3.0 I've yet to find any app that uses push notifications that's worth an install. (I don't need an IM app.) Are there any useful push notifications apps out there yet?
