Should Nintendo also acquire a franchise to attract hard-core gamers?

When Microsoft made the move to purchase the Gears of War franchise, I immediately thought about Nintendo. Nintendo lacks a hard-core gaming audience and although it has succeeded many times without that audience, I think the best way to start gaining their attention would be to purchase a franchise that already exists instead of trying to build one from scratch. No existing franchise will want to build for Nintendo exclusively due to the risk of lack of sales but if it was bought out by Nintendo, that problem would be removed to some extent and hopefully the existing audience will follow.

I'm in favor of Nintendo buying a franchise. However, I believe this will then cause Sony to react and before you know it, all three companies are buying franchises of all sizes which might affect the gaming market in a whole new way and force gamers to make sacrifices or buy all three gaming systems to play the games they used to be able to play with just one system.

What do you guys think?

I didn't do any research on this but I'd wager that Nintendo's most successful franchises (Mario, Pokemon, Zelda) probably have a larger worldwide audience than GoW.

Mario and Pokémon are the two biggest franchises in the world:

Interesting question. I'd hate to be in a situation where each of the game systems had a strangle hold on certain franchises. Unfortunately for Nintendo they do have a couple of major franchises that haven't been able to really drive sales of the WiiU. Maybe it depends on what's considered hard-core.

Well, has Bayonetta 2 hit yet? Because that's a hardcore franchise.
