Since the Surface Pro's hype has died down; Was it worth the purchase?
So I've wanted the surface pro ever since it was announced. But I didn't buy one when it was released because of all the mixed to negative reviews that came out about it.
I know the battery isn't the greatest. It's got mid-range ultrabook specs but is priced at the high-end and the keyboards, both touch and type cover, aren't a revolutionary as they claimed it to be.
My question is this:
For all those who did buy it.
Do you regret the purchase? Now that the hype has died down and you're using it, do you love it? do you hate it?
If I tell you I'm still thinking of getting one, knowing all the negatives, would you encourage me to get it or get something else?
1. Slimmer (doesn't have to be much, just a bit thinner)
2. Battery life improvement (I'm hopeful that they use Intel's new "Haswell" chip which should help)
3. Desktop-dock. For me this is the killer feature. I could carry the device with me during the day, throw it in my backpack/whatever, then come home and drop the thing into a dock which is connected to my big screen monitor. (and charges it of course)
It isn't an iPad or Android tablet replacement - get one of the Atom based Win 8 tablets for that. But it will serve duty as a tablet when you need it to.
It's much more of a laptop replacement. Light, compact, with good battery life and excellent performance with desktop apps. On the downside its not as easy to use on your lap as a laptop. Which isn't an issue for me as I've been using the Windows Pen interface since the XP days and can navigate/input quicker with the stylus than a regular keyboard and mouse. OneNote, Project and Word are my main apps and the Surface Pro is an absolute blast with all three.
Mine has replaced a MacBook Air, an iPad and a desktop; in all three modes its slightly compromised compared to a dedicated device. But then I don't think there's anything else out there that does as a good a job as being all three devices in one.
