Dude, this is one of my all-time favorite stories in the HISTORY OF GAME CONSOLES!! The PlayStation was just a big F U to Nintendo from Sony for screwing them over and went on to become the best selling console ever! Just beautiful!
And look how cosmic justice went one to deal Sony ha, jk this is a great story though never heard of it before. I got into hard core gaming with the Ps2 though.
dude, you need to read that whole wiki entry - it is spectacular! The whole damn playstation was originally just supposed to be an add-on to the SNES just like the Sega CD was to the Genesis! When Nintendo pulled out, Sony said "lets just do it without them!" Also, Philips got the rights to put out crappy Zelda and Mario games! No B.S.! They are the only other company to release Mario/Zelda games and they were like learning game trash for the stupid CD-i system of all things!!!!
Its all just an EPIC saga!
I know Sony is boned right now, but if you look at the wiki for worldwide console sales, Sony has sold more consoles with the PS1 and PS2 than with all of Nintendo's consoles combined..... so ya... um... Sony did well...
Actually i believe the DS has out sold all systems period, granted thats hand held but yes Sony had a great consoles and they sold well being one of the few out there besides Nintendo which i have always like more then Sony.
I'm talking about full sized home consoles.... Everyone knows the Nintendo is the only game in town for portables! Sony has done well and made a valiant effort with the PSP (I love my PSP-2000), but the numbers don't lie... But for home consoles, Sony is king...
(remember you can also thank Sony for bringing full backwards compatibility to home consoles as a standard feature)
True true although that backward compatibility came back to bite them, but they are the kings of consoles, for now and probably years to come, unless their motion control bites them again.
Yeah, Nintendo OWNS the portable gaming market.
I've known this story for decades. The fact that Nintendo decided to go with Phillips CDi instead of Sony's PSX was a boneheaded move. Part of it was that Nintendo didn't believe in discs, that the cartridge was rugged enough for children to play with, hence why the N64 was still cartridge based while the PSX and Saturn were disc based.
...Besides, anyone even remember playing the CDi games? I remember messing with a demo console at Sears while I was in college...I'd rather invest in Panasonic's 3DO than the CDi!
Yes, Nintendo did sell the rights to Zelda and Mario...again, a boneheaded move. GTTV's Screw Attack did a retrospective on the Legend of Zelda series; there were 1 or 2 games released on the CDi, but they are not considered part of the games' legacy.
Ya, I have 3DO and no CDi but thats just because the CDi is more rare. Even after they refused to go to the disc, they then went on to use a mini-dvd for the gamecube! They just have to be different! The Wii finally uses full size discs and I wonder if they will bother using Blu-ray for their next machine. I doubt they'll take the leap. If Nintendo hadn't have been so ugly to Sony during this debacle, they would probably only have to deal with Microsoft today. Hell, with no PS1 or PS2, the Dreamcast might have done well! It could've been Nintendo, M$, and Sega today... They really screwed over Sony and then Sony returned the favor for 2 amazing generations... (3rd gen is just as good of a machine, but poorly launched and managed...)
I'd blame Sony's marketing department for the PS3's bad launch...Remember the stupid baby doll commercial?
Anyway, the PSOne is still a great console. I keep mine around simply because I'm a collector, although a nice game of Ridge Racer, Tekken, and Jumping Flash every now and then.
Maybe Nintendo might humble down to Sony and put Blu-ray in a future system...either that or go all digital distro or backtrack and release carts again, LOLZ!
lol - seems crazy but their portable is STILL cart based... they are really resisting standardized flash memory for some reason...
