Twitter now supports animated GIFs!

This makes me ridiculously excited, because I love animated GIFs. Of course the Engadget / gdgt forums have supported this feature for quite a long time.

However, I noticed something interesting when I was trying to copy an image URL. It turns out, Twitter is re-encoding animated GIFs as MP4 videos.

I bet they're doing this for 2 reasons:
  1. Prevent hotlinking and immediately becoming the #1 web host for animated GIFs.
  2. Prevent GIFs from autoplaying (some heathens believe that this is annoying).

Too bad the only people who will see this will be those who use the official apps or the website. I doubt that many third party apps will enable this feature.

I'm optimistic that they will! Things like Tweetbot still provide support for third-party services such as Instagram, even though Twitter pulled their official support of it. I think we'll see more innovation and support from the third party apps in the near future. They obviously need to play around with the new feature, but I imagine if they already support Vine (which is basically playing MP4 videos through an HTML video wrapper), it should be easy enough to support these.

What I find really interesting is that animated GIFs don't seem to appear in the media tab under our user profiles at this time: e.g., https://twitter.com/davely/media

Adding the features that the official Twitter apps add isn't the same thing as keeping features that Twitter moves away from. I'm thinking of the multiple photos in a tweet option. I don't think Twitterific supports that option, nor do Fenix, Talon, or Tweedle (apps I've used on Android). It would be nice if more third party apps enabled the features that Twitter introduces. (I may be completely wrong about this because not many accounts are using the multiple photos feature)

Why does Twitter seem to be adding all this cool stuff now that I don't really use it anymore? -.-

If you think people who don't like autoplaying gifs are heathens, you clearly don't use Tumblr. Sometimes the damn thing just won't load images and I can hear my fan churning away, there are so many gifs. As convenient as it is for me to have everything load at once and then look through it all, it's negated by the wait.

I never have this issue with Tumblr but, I can understand how that would be an issue.

You need to follow more fangirls. It's a crazy, crazy world of gifs out there.
