Wii might drop to $200

www.engadget.com/2009/09/14/wii-getting-50-price-d...

Well this would make 3 of 3 for a price drop but it looks like the Wii might drop to the modest price point $200. I wonder if this will spark Microsoft to rethink the arcade version. What do you think will we see another price drop from Microsoft because of this.

I think it's inevitable. Nintendo already escaped the first round of price drops. Now with the slim PS3 being $299, its only $50 more than the Wii. Nintendo's success can be its own downfall, as pretty much everybody owns a Wii already, its sales might not looks as rosy as before. Microsoft needs to get rid of the Arcade, and bring the Pro at $199 price point. That will give Nintendo a run for its money.

Not only should they do a price cut but also bring out the black wii for holiday.

Black Wii for black Friday would be a great marketing. :)

I don't know why they haven't launched different colored wiimotes!

Xbox has many different colors: white, black, pink, blue, red, green, etc.

PS3 now released new colors: black, silver, red, and blue...

Wii is the only one left...

And it pisses me off that all of these consoles show many colors when they are prototypes, but then never follow through with it! The PS3 is always black and the Wii is white. Only the 360 has many colors and they are just special editions, not actual colors to get the console in.

People want different colors and I traded in my white DS for a Crimson/Black one. I want to trade in my black PSP for that awesome metallic blue one also....

With the original Xbox I had the original black one, the green Halo C.E. one, the blue Halo 2 one, and a custom painted Kill Bill modded one. Now that's variety!

Your right, in fact i was arguing about the new 360 with some PS3 fanboys on engadget last night. The special edition PS3 was slightly grey and had a small amount of special text on the bottom. The 360 special editions are far more, like the Halo 3, Simpsons, RE5, and now Modern Warfare 2 ones.

ya, that ONE special edition almost doesn't even count! they had a silver PS3 at Entertainmart, but it was a Japanese import and had a big warning label on it and an exorbitant price! what is it with sony and silver anyway??

Thats what i was arguing about and they flamed me for it, even though it was a 360 topic, idiots. But some PS3 fans are just plain ignorant.

seriously! don't ever mention this site during a flame out!! :P

Sony and Nintendo save all the cool stuff for Japan... and they wonder why we back our giant Xboxes!! They really need to get with the times and this global economy we got going on...

$250 was already cheap and so many people have a Wii, they are gonna have to try really hard to pimp the Wii this holiday season...

I got a Wii for 250, and it wasn't an expensive console. It's good for some things, however my displeasure with the Wii comes from the lack of good games. Basically everything under the sun that can use a nun chuck is marketed. Shooters are also wonky on it, which disappoints me, because half the reason i got it was for cool shooters. I figured the point and click idea would be neat for a console, and make shooters on the console easier, sadly i got Medal of Honor Heroes 2 and was disappointed to learn that in order to turn the view, i had to push the cursor off screen, and it was slow going.

I like the wii for parties and Metroid Prime 3 was a good example of how to make a great shooter on the wii... they really need to make more than 5 good games a year though...

Ain't that the truth? I liked the new Zelda, and I like the Resident Evil's that are on it. Also the virtual console is cool, and Skate It was a good game.

IT does have a couple games it has done really well, I have about 10 or so that i really like i just don't play, they really should update their interface with something like achievements like PS360. That would get me playing it more.

It has great games, just not as many as the 360 or PS3.. and I can walk into Blockbuster any week and get a new PS360 game that will be at least decent. Most weeks there are no new Wii games and theres lots of crap released... Again, I don't know how Nintendo can pimp this console anymore...

Well that is true but i think if they could pump out some more heavy hitters like mario, smash brothers, mario party, but i think the sell ablity comes from the replay ability of the games more so then the quantity.

At $200 the Wii is still pretty overpriced. The margins have got to be insane!

Well its, well maybe, well they have to pay there research team with something. I mean Nintendo did start the jump towards innovative controllers or lack their of.

true and honestly, if you do some research, you will find Nintendo has spent more money on R&D than anyone else since they started selling the Wii... They aren't just collecting the money and putting it in a mattress. They are spending in on the future and hoping to crush everyone next gen as well!!

Thats what i am hoping for, and i think Nintendo is still going to be the first out of the gate with the next gen console.

Its looking more like they'll have a weak and powerful console out at the same time the way Sony does... That model has served Sony well and I'm sure Nintendo is thinking it could help them in the long run... They dropped Gamecube support very quickly, but there's no reason it couldn't support both a Wii and a Wii HD/2...

It didn't drop the gamecube it just upgraded it, every gamecube game can be played on the wii, so why have two consoles that can do the same thing. I think when the second wii comes out, it will support all previous games, wii and gamecube, plus have potentially a much more powerful processor then the PS3 and 360, and only because those processors are 4 years old and could easily be put in the wii for the same price.

You are not recognizing that it would be suicide to drop Wii support completely like they did with the Gamecube. The casual people that picked up a Wii for fun won't be compelled to upgrade... They will stick with what they have and if Nintendo won't support it they will be fine... they will just play the games they have and the games that will suddenly be a bargain at used stores. The Sony method works better for everyone and don't forget - the PS2 and complete PS1 functionality too - it made no difference. They still produced both PS2 AND PS1 games and sold both systems at an insane rate... I think Nintendo is smart enough to exploit this...

Ok i do see what you are saying, but in the long run and the price of the wii it was just stupid to keep making the gamecube games, and only because the wii almost sold more consoles in the first few monts as the gamecube did in its lifetime, so to keep supporting it to me would have been a dumb idea, instead they did one better. All controllers memory cards and games work with the wii, so after upgrading you could keep all the stuff you had for it and it would work, You can't say the PS360 did the same, both had limited backwards compatibility and the controllers were not interchangeable to my knowledge, so by upgrading you had to ditch all your old stuff. Nintendo did it the right way. I think the only reason sony kept making the ps2 was for the opposite reason, the ps3 didn't sell well and they were still making money on the old console since no one wanted to upgrade. Now that it is cheaper and if it starts selling well they will drop the ps2 and just concentrate on the PS3.

Actually Sony did follow through with the PS3. They were going along with the same trajectory until they dropped backwards compatibility, which is why people got so pissed and why it is so dumb on their part. They got it right the first time and they were just dropping PS2 chips in every PS3 just like the did with the PS2. Microsoft was by far the worst - completely dropped all Xbox support and only emulated very few original games. Gamecube made a few games after the Wii was released. But the Wii is different - it has a huge install base and not supporting it would be suicide... You are wrong about why Sony keeps making the PS2 also. Sony has ALWAYS stated each of its consoles operates on a 10 year lifespan. This kept the PS1 still in production and still have games made for it during much of the PS2 lifetime and it is being repeated again now. That is one of the main reasons people love Sony. They don't drop their loyal customers. They let them gradually come along and buy the older hardware and games for the hardware for a long time. PS2 still has great selling software!! They develop games for the PS2, Wii, and PSP all together. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are developed separately - sometimes along with a PC version. Sony's model is far superior in this instance.

My Wii has been sitting next to my 360 gathering dust, it nice to drop the price, but its main use has really just been for parties.

that will change when New Super Mario Bros. Wii comes out.... that is unless its not good times or just gets boring after a while... I'm hoping it trumps all other 2D mario games!!

I'm already calling it now. The Wii price drop will not affect Wii sales as dramatically as either the PS3 or 360 price drop.... Nintendo had a good run but has failed to provide the software to back it lately. They would do well to have a New Super Mario Bros. Wii bundle like in the old days - back when "new nintendo system = amazing included mario game" :)

I'd also like to add that I'm shocked they dropped the price right now. They certainly did not need to but then again they have big enough margins to do this no problem... They have been making a profit on the hardware since launch day.........

You know it might there are still a lot of families with kids that didn't buy the wii, and the $200 price might make it so that they will know.

Ha, yeah i agree, but for little kids the wii is a better buy and more active, you can't disagree about that, but your right, the 360 is the best option out there and those who say the arcade isn't a real console are idiots.

I totally can disagree with that and I will tell you why:

If I was a kid and my friends were playing new games all the time and I was stuck with WarioWare and Super Mario Galaxy all the time I would be really pissed. I love lots of Wii games, but there are still not enough of them.. Theres not enough to keep a constant stream of quality titles coming like the 360 and PS3 do... For any gamer, young or old, the PS3 or 360 is the way to go.....

I am talking about 4-8 year olds, yes the 360 is the better bet for any one over ten, but i see wii's selling more to older people and kids that are to young to play graphic games, my kids will be playing whatever they want, but society has deamed it not right for kids to play graphic games, which is why the wii is great for really young kids.

my sister in law wants one, which is why she has mine right now.... I don't miss it much because of these big sept. anc oct. launches. they would have bought one at $250 anyway... (were already planning to)

I really am glad they dropped the price though because they were starting to look arrogant. At least now the prices have all fallen to mortal levels....

nah, I see lots of kids 8 and up playing xbox games... and hardcore gamers know that "graphic video game violence" stuff is bulls**t...

I could see super young kids but then they'll upgrade to a PS360 once they are old enough to realize they are getting shafted game-wise... especially because kids are social and the 360 has the best online social play out of all of them.......

The games are there on Wii ,the real problem is marketing and retail shelf stocking. None of these great core 3rd party games are getting any marketing or hype needed for most to know about them. Nintendo themselves is the worst at making people aware of these games and many of these game developers don't have the money to market them. Sony and MS advertise everything on a relentless scale. Nintendo just sits back and naps like lazy idiots.
How can people want a game they don't even know exists? So few copies are sold and no more are ordered in retail stores.

Sadly the only way to even know about most these games is to follow the developers move by move online and then buy online.

The quality of 3rd parties titles on the wii does not match the other two consoles. They have gotten better at at least putting games out now, but they come out no where near as much as the other two... I haven't played a new Wii games since... maybe.. Wario: Shake It...? And that was a good game but theres been like 50 good PS360 titles since then.... the scale is way off.. but yes, nintendo could be more helpful too...

That is true but the games that do make 3rd party are pretty good on the wii, some better then any PS360 game, maybe not visually but game play wise.

I have not bought a 1st [arty game since Mario kart, been sticking to 3rd party core games since. Been so many could not afford them all but they are there but might as well be buried next to Jimmy Hoffa since they go unnoticed most of them. Madworld is great,Klonoa is amazing even after all these years but I have biught many others however if you liked Odin Sphere or Princess Crown then def pick up Muramasa.

Most those hyped games on the HD systems are shooters and western based which don't go with my style,PS3 to me is the best of the HD systems, 3D dot game heroes,Yakuza series (supposedly finally coming stateside) Last Gaurdian really look great to me also.

By that measurement they all have way too many games for me to buy.. Thats why I rent (get 2 free game rentals a month from blockbuster online) them but that Wario one is the last one I rented. The last one I bought was Wii Sports Resort and I love that one. Next up - New Super Mario Bros Wii....
