Windows Mobile 5.0 = Windows Mobile 2005
It took 'em an extra three months (or so), but Microsoft finally unveiled the next version of Windows Mobile, their operating system for Smartphones and Pocket PCs, today. First big change: it's not called Windows Mobile 2005 anymore, so get used to hearing Windows Mobile 5.0 (they probably did that because "Windows Mobile 2005" won't sound so current when it's 2006." Among the new features announced are:
-
New mobile versions of Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile Viewer, and Excel Mobile.
-
Improved one-handed navigation so you don't have to use a stylus.
-
A new camera API that'll make it easier for developers to write apps that use a device's built-in camera.
-
ActiveSync 4.0.
-
Better WiFi support for Smartphones.
-
Support for push-to-talk and video calling.
-
Improved Bluetooth (e.g. ability to use ActiveSync over Bluetooth with multiple PCs).
-
Support for "persistent memory," which means that you won't lose all your data when your battery dies (a feature the Treo 650 and several other Palms already have).
-
Support for USB 2.0 so you can connect up to external hard drives. The press release was poorly worded, MSFT meant support for USB 2.0 AND support for internal hard drives. Not support for USB 2.0 for connecting external hard drives

I like the USB 2.0 support. It'll be easier to backup data on my existing drives. I hope the video calling runs at a good framerate, at least 30fps I hope.

Now if we only could get a good phone to go with the software... The SPH-M4300 from Samsung looks promising... what are the odds we'll see that one at Cingular? I think Verizon has some earlier version of it, right?

I prefer the numeric keypad on the SPH-M4300 vs the alha keypad - which I never use although I'm sure it is a great feature for heavy message users. I'd actually prefer it without any slider if it reduced the unit by even 1/4 inch in width/depth

Can we get Active Sync 4.0 for our PPC 2003?
Sebhelyesfarku @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Only morons want Windoze crap on their mobiles.
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Yes, ActiveSync 4.0 will work with non Windows Mobile 5 devices. I am using it right now with a Windows Mobile 2003 SE Smartphone and Pocket PC.
Semiguy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
OK so this is the version of the magneto which is coming out in the second half. it is being redesigned to work with a service pack that will be offered for exchange 2003 so that users can get email on a mobile basis, just like Blackberry.
I am a intensive user of email, are you? Do you smart people think the general public cares about getting push email in a real time way? I do!
Personally Im a little tired of microsoft, and think it will have to be an incredible product to get mass adoption.

Has anyone heard about full VGA support? Isn't that one of the shortcomings of current VGA PDAs?
Matt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#11, where'd you get ActiveSync 4.0? And do you know if it would work with PPC2002? (oldbie Ipaq H3100 here)
rollcow @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Does anyone know if it supports 640x480 screen resolution?
gwailo00852 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
@rollcow: yes, it supports vga. at least the htc universal should have vga, see some photos of the screen on the:unwired http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=2375
looks nice, while i wasn't a fan of the universal i might change my mind. now, if the pie (sorry iem) would support tabbed browsing also! :-(

In msmobiles, it showed screen shots of the new OS. It seems that although Pocket PC's and Smartphones will sport the "same" OS, it will not be exactly the same.
1) Pocket PC's and Smartphones will retain their original today screen formats.
2) Smartphone application navigation will be the same as Pocket PC (larger icons instead of list view).
2) Smartphone OS will NOT have the new Office Suite.
For a while there I thought the OS will be exactly the same, but after looking at the screen shots, I've been wrong. But we're moving closer to it...
It looks like the Pocket PC may support Smartphone apps but not the other way around.

The 'one handed' support should be a boost for the mobile porn industry :)

saludos

Not all (Most) handheld devices are not capable of being upgraded to Windows Mobile 5. so if HP says they don't upgrade it, it most likely means that it is not upgradeable.
