While in the friends menu, we sifted through 24 pages of phrases we could use. This is the angriest we could find.
Pick between VS or Battle mode. The number next to your name is your online score (you start at 5000, and then move up or down based on how well you do).

While VS mode gives you the usual allotment of possible karts, Battle mode only lets you choose from the Standard Kart or Standard Bike (at least at first).
The opponents you'll play will show up as their Mii character and on their relative geographical location.
If you join a group in progress, while you wait for the next race to begin, you can watch a live broadcast of the current race or battle. Pressing 1, 2, A or B will change the camera's focus.
The golden Wii Wheel icon means the character has been using the Wii Wheel extensively.
You can see everyone's rank, take bids on who is likely to beat you.
You can choose to vote for a stage to play next, or choose random if you want to abstain (from voting, at least).
The players with ? marks by their name chose random. One character is randomly chosen, and their choice is the next stage.
... Skipping ahead to after the match, your final score is shown, as well as the change in rank.
Note the upper-left sign that tells you the current pool of people who have either agreed to stay on or who haven't yet said they're quitting.
