Sure, World of Warcraft is the 8,000,000 pound gorilla right now, but there are other games out there, and some of them do at least some things better than WoW. This pre-Age of Conan and Warhammer Online list makes the case for five of them, from EVE Online to Dream of Mirror Online. Check it out if you're looking to play the field.

Supposedly there's no such thing as a free lunch -- that's just not true, but it could be argued that there's not really any such thing as a free MMO. Usually when we're talking about online games, "free" means either ad-supported, or more likely, microtransactions-based. That still beats dropping 50 simoleans for a box and then supporting your habit with a monthly fee, though. You can pick any of these games up right away (except for Mythos, which is sadly resting in the grave for the time being) and try them out without paying a dime, and they're actually quite a lot of fun.

Yeah, there are a lot of top fives on this top five list, but this is the last one, we promise! It was also our first top five, having gone live in our first month. It's our list of the very best Sci-Fi MMOs old and new, which we think still stands -- there hasn't been a strong challenger this whole year. Judge for yourself when you read the list; it's especially worth looking at if you're planning to take a break from Orcs and Elves.

The Warhammer Online launch was a big deal, and we're proud to say we were the place to be for exclusive coverage. Our "Massively goes to WAR" series of articles dove into features, classes, places, and much more, giving a comprehensive look at the then-upcoming MMO. Even now that the game is live, it's still a popular resource for current and future WAR players, dominating the majority of our day-to-day traffic.

Here it is -- by far (we mean really far) the most popular article in the history of Massively: the World of Warcraft player's guide to Warhammer Online. It seems most MMO aficianados have played at least a little bit of WoW, so it makes a good reference point for learning about new games. As we said, the WAR launch was huge, so we hope this guide helped some folks figure out whether or not to get WAR, and how to make the best of it if they did pick it up. It also makes for an interesting study in the evolution of the genre.
That's it for the Best of Massively (for now!) -- thanks for reading, ya'll, and tune in next week for tons of swag!
