Can the Liquid E3 hold its own against the Moto G? In our opinion no. Not only are Acer's UI tweaks functionally basic, both devices ship with Android 4.2.2 (although KitKat will reach the E3 "later this year").

Weighing in at 4.76 ounces, the E3 felt light in the hand, though the all-plastic construction isn't particularly inspired. The E3 features 13-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras, but Acer highlighted the new front-facing LED flash for illuminating those selfie shots.

When I examined the handset up close, I wasn't blown away by the screen's image quality. That said it gets satisfyingly bright and the colors do have some punch. Indeed the display's image quality drops when tilted off-angle, but not terribly so.

The design was simple but effective and we liked the matte feel of the rear when we held it. The display isn't the best out there but the colours look good and the viewing angles are also good.

The 4.7-inch IPS screen is one of this phone's best attributes, boasting a really good 312ppi from its 720 x 1280 pixels. From our short time with the device we found the viewing angles of the Acer Liquid E3 to be good too.

... a nice handset that doesn't rely too much on its rear-button feature (or "gimmick" as some people will call it). With its 720p screen, decent front-facing camera flash and Android 4.4 on the horizon, there's a lot of the good stuff going on. And (sigh) yes, it's a good one for the selfie lovers.

It offers solid specs, a decent design and a couple of neat hardware extras you don't see every day. Would we recommend it over a Moto G which costs just over half the price? From what we've seen so far, probably not.

In use, the Liquid E3 was quick to navigate through, thanks to its quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, with the 13-megapixel camera being quite rapid when taking photographs.

Despite distinctly mid-range credentials, the Liquid E3 and its unibody design is actually pretty nice. The rear button is placed pretty much exactly where you would want it to be when you pick the phone up – or at least when I picked it up – and the display is just fine at this size at 720p.

If you’re a devout follower of Acer’s Liquid series smartphones, the design of the Liquid E3 is a familiar one that suits its particular taste. The body itself is constructed out of matte plastic, which is the sturdy variety that not only gives it a lightweight feel in the hand.

The Liquid E3 has a 13 megapixel f/1.8 camera on the back. Further details on the camera include it having what is described as an ultra-fast focus. On the front you have the camera Acer is pushing for selfies. The front-facing camera is 2MP with a flash.

The phone itself is made primarily from plastic, but doesn't feel cheap; the rear cover doesn't flex or bend under pressure and the red grilles on the front give it a sleek appearance. It certainly doesn't stand out as a budget phone.
