Sadly, Iron Man can’t save the Alcatel One Touch Idol. At its current price, the smartphone doesn’t hold a candle to the more powerful and robust Nexus 4. Even if the smartphone was eventually offered by a carrier at a cheap price or even for free, the performance issues aren’t worth it.

Alcatel has struck a winning blow with the Idol X. It may have its faults, but between the gorgeous screen, satisfactory camera and effective multimedia functions, it has enough on its side to please buyers who want something close to a high-end phone without the high price tag.

So while 2012 marked its first foray into smartphones, judging by what we've seen so far in 2013 from them it seems they've nailed affordability while maintaining a surprising amount of quality, a great combination.

By phone standards, 5 inches is enormous, yet the Idol X doesn't feel huge at all. That's partly because it's so slim, and partly because the screen completely dominates the face of the phone. The bezel is incredibly thin, giving the feeling that not a millimeter is wasted.

The phone is only 0.27 inches thick, and Alcatel claims the "borderless" 0.09-inch bezel is among the thinnest in the biz. Built to reach up to HSPA+ 42 speeds this is definitely the most impressive device we've seen from Alcatel so far.

This device is extremely comfortable to hold, employing some near-soft plastic along the back and having a rather responsive touchscreen up front. With this device you’ll be rolling out with Alcatel’s own brand of Android.

It's safe to say that we were impressed with the One Touch Idol X prototype we got our hands on and with a potential price of under £250 it looks to be an absolute bargain. The four colour options and sleekness of design will appeal to the style conscious.

The unit we handled was definitely pre-production softwarewise (Android 4.2 with light skin) and most likely in hardware too, so things might change for the retail version. The Idol X feels very thin and light, despite the huge display, and is fairly compact for the panel thanks to the thin side...

The handset is comfortable to hold and the touchscreen seems to be fairly responsive. Bottom line here, the One Touch Idol X seems to be a nice step up for Alcatel. On that note, we have yet to see anything regarding a price.

It’s a handset that has a very capable and responsive touchscreen, with a semi-soft plastic wrapped on the back. When we handled the phone, we noticed how extremely comfortable it was to hold, which is a good sign for such a large handset. The device will come in Red, Blue, and Yellow.
