What is taking up "Other" space on my iPhone?
details
I haven't really cared much about the free space on my iPhone until it hit 0 bytes today and my phone gave me warning. The quickest thing for me to do was to delete a large game but when I connected to my computer, I noticed that a "Other" bar was consuming 2.5 GB of my iPhone's 13.57 GB. Does anyone know what is stored in this "Other" section? I don't think it's the OS and it definitely isn't temporary data in Safari. I've emptied the trash folder in my email and cleared all data from Safari...

Cydia tweak for installing newer apps on older iOS versions?
details
I recently dug my first generation iPhone out of a drawer and wanted to install some apps on it but most apps these days require at least iOS 4 to run. Is there a Cydia tweak that I can get to install these apps? I know not everything will work properly in the app via a hack like this but is it possible?

How do you sync podcasts on your iOS devices?
details
I'm loving iTunes Match but one thing it doesn't handle is podcasts. As someone with a half- to one-hour commute each way every day, I listen to a lot of podcasts, but I'm still stuck with an old fashioned iTunes sync as my primary way of downloading and syncing podcasts. Any better suggestions?

Edit: alright, it looks like it's between Instacast and Downcast. Anyone used both? Instacast seems to be more popular but the most recent version has gotten a lot of bad reviews on iTunes...

How to get iOS 5 features in iOS 4 via jailbreak?
details
Due to some complications with the Gevey SIM, it looks like I'll be stuck on iOS 4.3.5 for a while on my iPhone 4. I still want a lot of the features in iOS 5 though and was wondering how I could get these features possibly via jailbreak. (MobileNotifier seems to be a popular notifications system that is similar to Notification Center. iMessage doesn't seem to be able to be "ported" over to iOS 4 devices and iCloud features aren't even in consideration). But for jailbreak users, how did you get... Read more →

What are all the TV Everywhere apps? Help me build a comprehensive list!
details
I couldn't find a list of which networks have TV Everywhere-compatible apps, so I thought we could try and build a list here on gdgt. These are apps -- mainly for Android and iOS so far -- that let you access live and archive programming if you have a cable subscription.

The ones I can think of off the top of my head are:
  • HBO Go
  • CNN
  • ESPN
  • TBS
  • TNT
Post your additions below and I'll add them to the list here. Thanks!

Looking for recommendations for a stylus for the Apple iPad.
details
As much as I love my iPad 2, fingers are not ideal for drawing with anything other than finger paint on posterboard. I'd love to pick up a a pen-sized stylus with a small tip that would allow me to properly sketch wireframes and handwritten notes in creative meetings. Anyone have any recommendations?

Gevey SIM users - Can iOS 5 be used on the iPhone 4 by a custom Sn0wbreeze firmware?
details
To my understanding, the problem with upgrading to iOS 5 on an iPhone 4 with the Gevey SIM is that it updates the baseband to 04.11.06 which blocks the 112 exploit utilized by the Gevey. The Gevey claims it's only compatible with iOS 4 and not iOS 5 but I think what they really mean is that it's compatible with only basebands 02.10.04, 03.10.01, and 04.10.01 (found in iOS 4). So by using Sn0wbreeze to create a custom firmware maintaining the lower iOS 4 baseband, I should be able to upgrade to...

Best apps for backing up iPhone call logs, SMS, and other iOS user data?
details
I've been using iOS since back in the day when it was called "iPhone OS" (i.e. 1.0 - 3.0), and I recently realized that I've never done a full manual restore of my iPhone system state. Everything I've got on my device(s) have been carried with me through successive backups and upgrades and each new iPhone release since 2007. Call me crazy, but there's got to be a lot of junk in there gumming up the works. (For more on that topic, see this awesome thread on bit-rot:... Read more →

How can I delete imported photos from the Photo Album app on the iPad?
details
Over the last few months, I've imported a number a photos directly to my iPad, using the Apple Camera Connection Kit. Now that everything had finally been brought over to my computer, I want to get rid of them.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's an easy solution. If I open up the Photo Album app and look at the recent events, I see all the various imported events listed. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to individually remove the events. It looks like I have to go into the event,... Read more →

Moving my Mum to an iPad.
details
I'm sick of having to show my Mum things like how to view attachments, how to print, how to use word, sync her iPod Touch, rip music in iTunes. So I'm thinking of moving my Mum to an iPad with the launch of iCloud. Before I loan her my iPad to try it, what should I really expect, I mean, for me an iPad is simple, will a basic user like her actually find it simple?

Is there technically a difference between jailbreaking iOS devices and rooting Android devices?
details
I often see people leave disparaging comments toward Apple devices, saying things like, "Oh, you have to jailbreak if you want that. Hahaha." Then turn around and talk about rooting an Android phone to do something (or remove some built in app). So, is there really a technical difference between jailbreaking and rooting? Are we being overly pedantic?

Do you prefer native apps or using your mobile browser?
details
When using your mobile device which do you tend to go for: the mobile optimized web site or the native app? I never really thought many people used mobile browsers until listening to an older TWiT:AAA discussing browsers there was an overwhelming support for DolphinHD due to it's LastPass integration. I don't recall ever really finding myself browsing a ton of different sites that would necessitate using a browser just for LastPass integration.
I've always been a supporter of native apps because... Read more →

How often do you use in-app purchasing in mobile applications?
details
A survey of applications for iOS reported that 72% of revenue for developers comes from in-app purchases. It sounds like the freemium model (free app, but you pay for added features and content inside the app) is working -- 48% of revenue is coming from freemium apps at the moment.
How often do you find yourself purchasing in-app content and what sorts of content do you purchase?
I imagine that part of it depends on the app. I often encounter this sort of thing in games. You can either invest the... Read more →

Exactly what devices can scan QR codes?
details
So I had a few shirts made for my podcast last week, and I put QR codes on the back that link to our site so that people can scan them. Most of my friends own Android devices, so I know they can scan them, but I am curious to know if other devices (besides Android) can scan/use them, or if QR codes are Android exclusive.

Thanks in advance!

Restoring iPod Touch backup to iPhone?
details
I have a fourth generation iPod Touch right now but I plan on upgrading to an iPhone 4 soon. If I setup my iPhone using a backup of the iPod Touch, will I run into any issues?
I know that restoring an iPhone backup to an iPod Touch will cause all sorts of strange problems but what about iPod to iPhone? For example, some apps are altered for the iPod Touch because of a different microphone location and lack of a vibration motor for instance. Will those changes be restored as well?
Or if I wait for...
