Favorite features of iOS8 and your impressions so far
iOS dropped yesterday and a lot of the features Apple introduced help bring it up to parity with Android. Better TouchID support, widgets, sharing, keyboards and a whole slew of stuff. What features have you been enjoying the most so far?
For me it's definitely better TouchID support. 1Password and Day One have implemented this for unlocking each app. It makes getting into them much easier.
After that it's improved sharing. I no longer need some hokey way to save stuff to Instapaper or Pinboard. I... Read more →

What do you think about Microsoft's dream to kill the tablet?
Microsoft seems dead set on killing the need for both a laptop and a tablet with their latest announcement. With the same weight, more power, and a refined design, Microsoft might just have a winner on their hands.
On the other hand, I think I speak for everyone when I express intense desire to do crosswords on my super expensive piece of high-tech machinery.
Did anything strike you about the latest Surface?... Read more →

Are digital magazine subscriptions worth it?
I've been contemplating picking up digital subscriptions for various magazines to help encourage me to read more on the weekends. The thing is, looking at the prices of something I feel like they may be a little overpriced. When I browse through the store a lot of them (if I can actually find them) don't even look like they're designed for tablets, offering nothing more than PDF scans of the articles.
I'm likely going to purchase a few issues before a flight to see if it's worth it, but I'm just... Read more →

Best way to identify battery draining apps on iOS?
Something is absolutely destroying my battery on my iPhone 5s. I can take it off the charger at 6:30 and by 2:30 I'm having to place it back on the charger because it's almost in the red (less than 20%). It's a feature I never used on Android, but I'm kind of missing it right now.

How can I best identify just what in the hell is crushing my battery?

Does a product's repair score really matter to you?
iFixit has become quite popular, and their teardowns of newly announced products always grab the attention of the tech world. Their most recent teardown of the newest Retina model Macbook Pro unsurprisingly scored a 1, and of course it's causing a bit of a stir. While they are often interesting since they provide a real good look at the product, do these teardowns serve any form of relevance anymore? Especially for products like the... Read more →

Are the iOS 7 animations causing motion sickness?
The Verge ran across an Apple support thread about a number of users complaining of headaches and nausea from the increase in animations for iOS 7. A number of users are chiming in to say they too are having issues from the new animations. The single biggest request is the ability to turn them off, or potentially speed them up.
I have to agree that the animations are a bit long in the tooth and they can be a bit excessive with the zoom-in and zoom-out affect.
If you upgraded to iOS 7 have you been... Read more →

What are your WWDC 2013 Predictions
WWDC is just hours away, and there has been no shortage of rumors about what Apple has planned, especially for iOS. It seems like ever since the news broke about Scott Forstall leaving the company (1) and Jony Ive stepping in, there have been expectations of a major iOS redesign. This became even more clear when Apple updated their podcast app on iOS to a much more modern design (2). As the weeks and days have gone on more mockups and rumors kept swirling about a redesign, with even this years... Read more →

Connecting Jawbone UP to your Devices?
So I just bought a Jawbone UP. I tried to connect it to my HTC One X, but it wouldn't connect on Android 4.1. I thought there was something wrong with the UP, but it worked just fine when connected on my iPad 4.

Anyone else have experience with connecting the UP band to other Android devices? How has your experience been?

Is the iPad mini a PC? No, it's a supercomputer!
According to a new report, Apple is now the world's top PC maker -- if you count the iPad as a PC. The report, from Canalys, says that Apple has a 20% share of the global PC market, having shipped 27 million computers during the 4th quarter of 2012 -- with iPads accounting for 22.9 million of those "computers."
With computer companies struggling amid competition from tablets, and even Apple seeing its high-flying stock come down to Earth as... Read more →

gdgt Zeitgeist 2012, Part I: Best and Worst of the Year
Over the past year, we’ve scored well over a thousand gadgets. Most of those are good products, with gdgt Scores in the mid 70s to low 80s. These are gadgets you aren’t likely to be disappointed with if you get them, but they’re not likely to wow you either. But we also scored some truly great devices, with scores in the upper 80s and 90s, as well as some that were just awful, with scores as low as 50. As with all of the products we... Read more →

Apps for your parent's new tablet
If your parents got a new tablet for Christmas, what apps are you installing for them? I realized many of my favorite apps wouldn't be useful for them, but I have installed the following:
  • IMDB
  • Flixter (for watching trailors)
  • Skype
  • TED (in hopes they watch some education videos)
  • YouTube
  • Pandora (or Slacker Radio if your in Canada)
  • Facebook
And if your on Android, i felt the following widgets would be handy:
  • weather widget
  • bookmarks widget
  • google search widget
  • calendar widget

Cell Phone Data Connection
How often do you use the cell phone data connection on your iPad, or does WiFi suffice. I am trying to decide which model to get and could benefit from some feedback on how often this comes into play for other people.

As of now I see the iPad as being primarily a game device and possibly a minor use as a software appliance (omni plan / omni focus).

Thanks in advance,
