How would you change the 13-inch, mid-2013 MacBook Air?

Meet the new boss, broadly the same as the old boss. Except this variation of Apple’s thin-and-light mobile PC was packing Haswell, Intel’s power-sipping wonder chip, capable of giving the 2013 MBA its 12-plus-hour battery life and nippy speed. When we sat this down in front of Tim Stevens’ hands, his only grip was that the device was lacking a retina display, although we’re probably still a... Read more →

Best desktop chat client for OSX?
details
I've been a long time user of Adium and it's pretty good at doing it's one job: acting a central point for multiple chat services. However it's pretty long in the tooth in terms of updating. The last one was in May 2013, and before that it was December 2012.
Is there any modern client now that is good at handling multiple services, including Google's Hangout service? Adium does XMPP but the Hangout integration is pretty medicore and doesn't pull in group Hangouts. I would switch to Messages but I... Read more →

iTunes on my network box is SLOOOOOOWWWWWW...
details
I use iTunes on my Macbook Air but I only have a small bit of storage so I try to store all my music on a Synology network box. It's not the best solution because iTunes runs really slow. The spinning ball keeps popping up and I can't do anything.
The only reason i even want to use iTunes is to keep my music folders organized. If I could find another app that will let me import music to my /Music folder and keep things organized by /[Artist]/[Album] then I could happily ditch iTunes to the curb.... Read more →

Help me improve my home network situation
details
Nine times out of ten I can rely on just using wireless for my networking needs, but there are a lot of times that I could use a more solid connection. Currently I'm trying to make this possible using MoCa, which is built into FiOS router hardware, to give some areas a dedicate wiring connection. Here's the downfall: each adapter is $100 and the speeds are roughly 100Mbps/6-9MB/s which isn't bad in most cases, but the problem comes that it can at times fully saturate the network.
I also have... Read more →

What do you think about Microsoft's dream to kill the tablet?
details

Microsoft seems dead set on killing the need for both a laptop and a tablet with their latest announcement. With the same weight, more power, and a refined design, Microsoft might just have a winner on their hands.
On the other hand, I think I speak for everyone when I express intense desire to do crosswords on my super expensive piece of high-tech machinery.
Did anything strike you about the latest Surface?... Read more →

Torn between 11 inch and 13 inch.
details
So, I held off buying a MacBook Air until Apple updated the line, which, as expected, they did. Originally, I had always been focussed on getting the 11 inch variant, as my purpose for buying it is a super-portable but also super-powerful computer. I can't remember if the 2012 MacBook Air's had different possible internal specs, but this year both sizes offer identical internals. I plan on getting the 1.7GHz i7 and 8GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB storage - depending on whether I buy a new... Read more →
