With the 850 portable speaker, Braven delivers a stunning industrial design while still providing superb sound quality. The look of Braven's speakers may not appeal to everyone, but if you prefer minimalist and industrial, then this speaker has your name on it. Digital Trends says Braven has created a "timeless aesthetic" with their speakers, which not only look good, but also have "solid build quality." The size and weight may make the Braven 850 a little less than fully portable, with it topping the scale at roughly 3 pounds. If you do decide to take it out on the town, the built-in battery is rated for 20 hours of play time. Music playback on the 850 sounds "excellent," according to TechBargains, and GottaBeMobile says it can fill up a "dorm room, large him great room ... or a small auditorium" with sound. At $299 the Braven is priced pretty high comparative to other portable options, but its build quality, design, top-notch sound, and built-in battery (which also allows you to charge your phone) do make it an enticing option for those who are okay with the premium price.

All in all, Braven 850 is a good rather than great portable speaker, earning a small edge over the Big Jambox largely on the basis of semi-unique added features—the spare battery and dual streaming functionality—rather than sonic performance or industrial design.

We can’t think of a better product with the versatility and features, including Bluetooth 3.0, long battery life, hands free phone integration and the ability to pair two speakers for double the sound.

At $300, the Braven 850 and 855s are on the pricier side of the market, but the superb build and audio quality, and ability to use them as portable chargers make both an enticing buy, as long as you can get past the weight.

Positioned to compete against larger portables like Jawbone’s Big Jambox and Bose’s Soundlink, the 850 provides bigger sound with more bass and higher volume capability than the mid-size portables we’re used to seeing, thanks to larger drivers and a 20-watt amplifier.
