When you put a 30x zoom lens in a compact camera and sell it for $249, there are bound to be some trade-offs, and in the case of Canon's PowerShot SX500 IS, the biggest one is image quality. As Pocket Lint puts it, "image quality is let down by both the lens and image processing," and even at the camera's lowest ISO settings, "there’s still a presence of luminance noise and the processing reveals slightly “fuzzy” edges." Zooming in on distant subjects causes the camera to struggle with what Pocket Lint calls "colour fringes, slight softness from image processing and image noise problems." While ePhotoZine points out that the SX500 IS is capable of "generally good" image quality, "if you mostly shoot outdoors at lower ISO settings," if you want better performance in a superzoom, you'll need to spend more and get something like Canon's PowerShot SX50 HS, or settle for an older model, like the SX40 HS, which is still available, and sells for just a little more than the SX500 IS.

It has its limitations, but the Canon PowerShot SX500 IS is a good choice for zoom addicts on a budget.

If you need a long zoom in a compact body, then you won't get much lengthier or smaller than the Canon PowerShot SX500 IS. The 30x lens is truly impressive in so compact a device.

Need a lot of zoom for a little bit of cash? The PowerShot SX500 IS fits the bill nicely, as long as you can live with its quirks.

The compact size and ease of use makes the Canon Powershot SX500 IS appealling although the slow shot to shot times and slow continuous shooting may put some people off, particularly if you want to capture high speed action such as sports.
