Google is planning to sell 5 Nexus devices via its Play Store.
details
The WSJ has gotten some information that Google may be announcing it's plan to announce 5 unlocked Nexus devices at the upcoming Google I/O event. There is no word yet on who will be making the phones but the report states they're planning to partner with a variety of OEMs to make this happen. Oh and the cherry on top, they'll be rocking the latest version of Android which at I/O will be Jelly Bean. The one thing that wasn't mentioned was which carriers this will work with but given the fact... Read more →

Do seperate/proprietary android markets hurt the android platform?
details
I've been meaning to ask this for a while, and I'll keep this to the point. What are the opinions out there regarding separate and some even proprietary markets for android apps? I don't know about you guys but I'm constantly hearing about random markets and it's a bit frustrating, personally. I USED to grab the free apps on amazon but it caused undesired (and unfortunate) side effects with the regular market if those apps happened to be available there. Issues like random notifications for... Read more →

Is the Facebook Android app always running in the background? Here's a fix.
details
If you're like me, you've probably been annoyed that Facebook's Android app is always running in the background, even when you've disabled notifications. How to fix this? In the settings screen, re-checked Notifications so the "Refresh interval" option becomes available and then change that to "Never". Then disable Notifications again. Force quit the app and it should never be running again.
I have only tested this on stock Ice Cream Sandwich, but I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work on... Read more →

How Do You Feel That Most Android Users Can't Upgrade to 4.0 ICS?
details
Will You Be Getting An Upgrade?
It seems that most of Google's installed base is stuck on versions of Android more than a year old, and few will get updates on devices more than a year old, even if they are still under contract.
"Blogger Michael Degusta revealed in October that 45 percent of Google's installed base of active Android users were stuck using software released in the middle of 2010. That's because handset makers like Samsung, HTC, Motorola and others do not make those updates... Read more →

Why I Don't Use an Android Based Phone
details
Some History
I used to be an avid Palm fan when they came out with their first handheld and then their Treo. I eventually picked up a first generation iPhone after it had been out for about 8 months. I then went to a 3GS and now the 4S. I have tried Android based phones for short periods of time, say hours, not days, so I am by no means anywhere near an expert on Android based phones. I am also not writing this to try and get anybody to switch, only just to have a lively discussion.

Why I don't use an iPhone
details
People always want to know what phone I'm using -- which is one big reason why I started gdgt -- and I often get asked why I don't use an iPhone. The launch of the iPhone 4S this week presented me with yet another opportunity to pass over Apple's offering, so I thought I'd lay it out my reasons for sticking with Android.
Let me preface all this by saying that this is not a criticism of your choice of phone. If you like your phone I am really happy about that. Seriously. There's a reason why we... Read more →

Minecraft just released for all Android devices!
details
Says it works on all of my Android devices (Nexus One, Xoom and HTC Thunderbolt) but so far I've only downloaded it to my Xoom. It plays flawlessly. It's just Creative Mode, and it doesn't have any mobs or all of items that are available in Minecraft proper but it's a start!
And it also has multiplayer. Yeah buddy!
Picture of it running on my Xoom and a crappy brick house I built: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-80IOs_02lhs/To9a9M5Az1I/AAAAAAAABe0/8DSvEEw4aPw/s912/IMAG0036.jpg

11 thoughts on Google buying Motorola Mobility
details
1. This is about patents Probably every single article I've read about the deal has mentioned Android's patent problems, and I doubt that Google would have bought Motorola Mobility if it were simply a handset maker; it's that vast trove of patents that drew Google in. In fact, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha hinted last week that they might begin using their patent portfolio to make claims against other Android licensees, something which in retrospect turns out to have been a negotiating... What is the best Android phone right now? Why?
details
I know this is a highly subjective question but I want to know what people think the most important features are when comparing Android phones. I'm guessing phones with the Tegra 2 or other dual core variations will appeal to power users while display enthusiasts will either go for a SAMOLED+ or qHD LCD. I believe hardcore Android nerds will say that the latest Nexus is the best because of its stock UI. Do you look for a durable aluminum enclosure? Or perhaps it's the camera that is a deciding...

Windows Phone 7 music player is now on Android...sort of.
details
The developer behind Launcher Pro, Federico Carnales, just released an alpha preview of an Android music player that looks pretty much identical to the one you would find on WP7. Engadget has a video comparing the real deal vs the Android version and it's amazing how similar they are. I just installed it and it's everything you would expect, but a bit buggy (to be expected). If you want to try it out for yourself, you can find the apk here:... Read more →

Android is starting to aggravate me.
details
First of all, I have to point that I LOVE Android. I love how you can customize it to your heart’s content and I love how apps can reach out to other apps without any difficulty. Before I complain, I try my best to do something about it before saying something. So please don’t assume that I’m just making these complaints rashly. 1. Fix Google Voice! There are several bugs that needs to be fixed with Google Voice and it aggravates that Google still hasn’t fixed this app after a couple... Read more →
