A supersized phone with supreme battery life

The Ascend Mate tops them all for screen size and battery life, but it's a budget phone on the inside.

At times, the Ascend Mate comes across as a two-sided smartphone. There's the would-be flagship, with a big screen and even bigger battery life ... The other half is classic Huawei: that is, it's a budget-conscious device that undercuts its pricier competition.

So with everything considered, the price, the brilliance of the phone in general, we have to say the Mate has earned our respect. We liked it from the moment we took it out of the box, and it just kept impressing us. This is one of Huawei's finest, and we hope it does more like this.

The Huawei Ascend Mate has a huge display, good battery life and a competitive price tag but is let down by very sluggish performance and an ugly user interface.

For a Benjamin more you can get the wildly popular and slightly smaller Galaxy Note II, but if you are into the largest screen possible in the most manageable size out there, Huawei Ascend Mate can't be beat.

It shortcomings, such as the lack of 4G compatibility and low headphone volume, may turn off some users, but otherwise this phone is a worthwhile buy for anyone looking for a phablet that doesn't cost a fortune.

It still looks like Huawei are doing most things right - the Mate is a well-balanced package and the price is hard to beat.

The Huawei Ascend Mate is a phone with a massive screen and a big battery. ... Its general appeal is much less obvious than a large-screen phone like the Galaxy Note 2, and we found its extra inches as often an annoyance as a help.

You can use this as a tablet and a phone. It would be better to buy two devices, but this comes close to being a suitable substitute.

While we were impressed with the screen and battery life, Huawei's overbearing UI is unlikely to win over many users, who might become frustrated by the handset's lacklustre performance, despite its high-end quad-core processor.

Although the curves and the thin profile save it from being too huge for daily use. Those extra software inclusions (for one-handed use, including a dialer and keyboard) worked well enough and the screen really comes into its own when you're watching video.

[T]he Mate is a handful, but it’s surprisingly grippable thanks to its slim waistline. That said, one-handed operation is dicey to say the least, but it’s not downright impossible. ... Putting the size aside though, flipping through the device was a largely seamless experience.

Huawei seems to realize that a phone this large can present some usability issues, and to that end, it has created what it calls one-hand UI, which essentially squishes the keyboard or number pad over to one side of the screen, depending upon which hand you type with.

If it's a more-than-5-inch-screen phablet you're looking for, keep looking. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is the obvious choice for those who can't wait for the next generation from Samsung or others.

The Ascend Mate is definitely a good effort from Huawei and feels surprisingly premium. Things like Magic Touch technology so you can use it with gloves, or its quick battery charge time are nice touches. One to keep your eyes on.

It has a big, huge, massive screen. But isn't it too big? We've leaped over many screen size hurdles over the past four years, but when you need to start wearing surfer shorts to accommodate a new phone, isn't that something else?

We're not completely sold on that philosophy and tend to sway towards the theory that a 6.1-inch phone is pretty mad – verging on unnecessary. We expected a snappy experience from the Ascend Mate and it is by no means a slouch but it just didn't feel as slick as the offerings from HTC and Samsung.

I am a little concerned with the fact that the device is slightly too wide for my hand, there is a tipping point where the user experience might stop to be agreeable with this type of form factor.
