LaCie's 5big Thunderbolt RAID drive offers fast speeds and copious amounts of storage, but at a high price. LaCie offers the 5big in either a 10TB or 20TB configuration, and TechRadar says all five disks are "easily replaceable." As a Thunderbolt-capable array it really comes through on the performance front, with PC Mag declaring it "one of the fastest drives" they've ever tested. TechRadar found the 5big faster than average speed-wise, but felt the drive is more "consistent in difficult conditions" though "still acceptably fast." With a starting price of $1200, and no Ethernet capabilities the 5big Thunderbolt only serves a small subset of users -- but if you're one of those users and need a dedicated RAID array, this is one to consider.

The 5big Thunderbolt positions LaCie with a high-performing, if somewhat narrowly-focused, entry point into the emerging Thunderbolt RAID DAS market niche. The box is designed very well and will appeal to the creatives at which it's targeted.

The price point cannot justify what amounts to a thunderbolt external enclosure. Each of the 5 drives is only RAIDable via OS software (i.e. Disk Utility). Needless to say, that means you get 4TBx5 drives with no RAID5 or 6.
