Operation Finish all the Games, June 2014
details
http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/lampbane/135127/63934/63934_300.jpg
The point of this project was to try and reduce my games backlog, which goes back at least 10 years for some games. Unfortunately, new games continue to come out, and plenty of retailers (Steam, GOG.com, Humble Bundle) keep having great sales that I can't ignore, making my task almost Sisyphean. But I'm not giving up just yet, not after I've come so far!
As always, the basic rules of this quest:
  1. Finish or beat one game a month....

Nintendo Strikes Back: What do you think of Nintendo's E3 announcements?
details
No, Nintendo didn't announce a new Super Mario Strikers game (though the timing would have been great), but they talked about a whole bunch of other games and products worth getting excited about -- but are they enough to revive the flagging Wii U?
Biggest on the slate was something we all knew was coming -- Nintendo's NFC figurines, known as "amiibo." Amiibo are very similar to Skylanders and Disney Infinity, though right now they look to be more of an add-on to compatible games than the center... Read more →

E3 reveals?
details
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/06/e3hedimg619px.jpg
So, we're about two months away from E3 (Paris Fashion Week for games, for the uninitiated), what do you want to see from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony? Given that everyone's new hardware is out in the wild, the focus this year is likely going to be on games, games, games, games and possibly a bit of VR.
No one knows what any of the platform holders have in store for this fall, but there are a handful of third-party games... Read more →

Nintendo lays out their game plan for the future: change is a comin'
details
Nintendo held a strategy briefing Thursday morning (Wednesday for US-dwellers) where they outlined their strategy going forward in the wake of ongoing financial losses, especially in the last quarter, which forced them to cut their sales forecasts for not just the struggling Wii U, but also the much stronger 3DS. You can read the Engadget post for more details (http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/29/nintendo-wii-u... but some general highlights:
  • Analysts from both inside and...

Favorite games from 2013
details
We've had some exciting gaming discussions here in the forums over the past year. We talked about our initial impressions of the new consoles, if Nintendo can survive, and even what games we're all playing. As the year wraps up I thought it'd be fun to get a good idea of the communities favorite games to come out in 2013. This serves as a great way to check out games you may have missed or forgotten about.
QuizUp (iOS): This is nothing more than a simple trivia game that you can play against... Read more →

Do you prefer the physical or digital versions of video games?
details
With the next generation of gaming consoles having officially arrived, many are trying to decide if they are going to stick to the physical versions of games or go all digital. There are the pros and cons to each, but I am firmly in the physical game camp when I can. I like the look of physical games on the shelf, I enjoy the box art for my games, and I know that I shouldn't rely on the console manufacturer to get my digital games back in some sort of crash or theft of my device. Looking at you... Read more →

Best places to StreetPass
details
This past June I bought a 3DS XL, which I share with my boyfriend (I don't commute much anymore so I don't really need my own portable gaming system). Though I bought one mainly to play games like Animal Crossing, the included minigames that work with StreetPass quickly became one of our favorite features -- and probably more of a time sink than Pokémon. We even bought the additional games, like Mii Force and Warrior's Way.
Of course, none of these games work without StreetPass tags -- luckily,... Read more →

Are mobile games becoming unfashionable?
details
Somewhere between 2004 (release of the original DS) and 2011 (3DS) I found that my habit for mobile games had altered. I went from training Pokémon on the bus to blasting marbles around in Peggle. It was a natural shift and whilst my portable Nintendo still saw new experiences come along they came along alot less than my trusty old Gameboy Advance during its hey day.
However as time went on the things I was playing on the go seemingly became less original and I felt that every new app I tried... Read more →

Nintendo is doing just fine and doesn't need to make games for mobile, thank you very much
details

It seems like every few weeks someone is writing a new article about how Nintendo is doing horribly and how they need to start releasing their games on iOS because that's where the future is.

What are your most anticipated games for this holiday season?
details
With 2 new console releases, launch titles, and too many other games to count coming out this holiday season, it can be tough deciding which games to preorder and purchase versus those to wait on. There are the big AAA titles coming to all consoles, and then there are the smaller Indie titles. It can be hard keeping track of the delays, release dates, and sheer number of games being released.
If you are on iOS and need help keeping track of it all, I've been using this great app called Launch... Read more →

Did you get a 3DS or 2DS to play Pokémon X Y?
details
The new 3D Pokémon games, X and Y, released this past weekend on October 12. Nintendo also released their new 2DS, the non-3D handheld aimed at younger children that day, and many were clamoring to get their hands on the limited edition Pokemon X and Y 3DS XLs.
Did you pick up Pokémon or a 2DS/3DS to play the game? Which version did you pick? And what Pokemon starters did you decide on?
Personally, I already had a 3DS prior to the Pokémon release, I chose Pokémon X, and went with Fennekin and... Read more →

Windows 8 and the Myth of the All-Purpose Device
details
With the release of Windows 8 and its ecosystem of hardware near at hand, I have been thinking about the ancient (in technology years) myth of the all-purpose device. This myth is one every geek knows and dreams of. The idea of having a single device that you carry around that can meet all of the technology needs you have is one that has captured the imagination since the days of the first "portable" computers. For geeks everywhere, though, it is ultimately a dream that leaves us depressed and... Read more →

The future of portable gaming - dedicated handhelds or gaming tablets?
details
With the recent explosion in the popularity of mobile gaming, pundits have been forecasting the end of dedicated gaming consoles like the PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS, saying that these are increasingly becoming niche devices and that most people will be doing their gaming on their phones, on tablets, or on the iPod touch, the latter being advertised as a gaming device by Apple.
Then again, what does that say with the announcement of products like the Razer Project Fiona, a Windows 8... Read more →

Radiant Historia a must-have for all DS owners who like JRPGs
details
Wow, I picked up a used copy of Radiant Historia for the DS a few months ago and have been slowly chipping away at it. I am now about 20 hours in and am absolutely hooked. This has easily become my favorite RPG ever. The story and character development are even better than my previous favorites, Final Fantasy IV (aka II), Final Fantasy VI (aka III), Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, and even Cosmic Fantasy 2 (an old TG16 CD game that had my favorite story up until now).
I have tired over the... Read more →

Okay... so who's "over" their shiny new 3ds? I am... until zelda comes out at least.
details
It seems that the only game that truly impressed me so far was street fighter. others felt rushed or too short. I'm getting impatient because the only reason i reserved the 3ds to begin with was for zelda, resident evil, and metal gear solid 3. Bring on the good games already!!!
