Compact enthusiast cameras have been gaining traction thanks to popular models like the RX100 and now Olympus is jumping on board with the impressive Stylus 1. ePHOTOzine says the Stylus 1 has "classic camera styling" and Digital Trends likes its "comfortable feel" and weight that lets you "grab it with two hands like a DSLR." Despite its compact body, Camera Labs says it has "great controls." Like other compacts the Stylus 1 won't best many of the DSLR models out there, but it does deliver photos that TrustedReviews calls "more than satisfactory for its audience." Unsurprisingly, the Stylus 1 isn't the best when it comes to shooting video, and CNET says while the video quality is "good, this camera is definitely better for photos." Olympus priced the Stylus 1 to compete, and that coupled with impressive performance should put it near the top of your list if you're looking for an enthusiast camera.

The Olympus Stylus 1 brings a breath of fresh air to the bridge market, proving that new-gen bridges can have it all, with a fast lens but a compact build, and user-friendly controls but a decent selection of advanced options.

The key behind the STYLUS 1 is it delivers most or even all of what many people want from an upmarket bridge camera without the frills or specialist video capabilities of the RX10.

The Olympus Stylus 1 is a feature-packed advanced compact that is well designed and offers a good level of performance. There are a few issues with the camera’s lens, and at its current price it is a touch too expensive, although it does perform at the level we expect of an advanced compact.

The Stylus 1 uses the same retro-chic body style that sets the OM-D E-M5 apart from the crowd. It's not weather-sealed like the E-M5, but it does use the same EVF, which is one of the better ones that we've seen on a high-end mirrorless camera.

The Stylus 1 is Olympus's latest high-end compact camera. With 'mini-DSLR' styling and a constant-aperture F2.8 28-300mm (equivalent) zoom lens, the 12MP Stylus 1 has a lot to offer the amateur and enthusiast photographer.

First impressions are that it's an upmarket compact with a decent viewfinder on board. Olympus hasn't gone down Panasonic's Lumix GM1 route as the Stylus 1 has a fixed lens; and it's avoided treading the path of the Sony Cyber-shot RX10 because the Stylus 1 opts for a smaller 1/1.7-inch sensor.

I found the Olympus Stylus 1 to be quite comfortable in the hand, the contoured grip on the front and curved thumb rest on the back make for a very secure hold on the camera, and the shutter button is well-placed for one-hand shooting.

We have only used a pre-production sample and we weren't allowed to examine the images we shot with it on a computer monitor. However, the images looked good on the camera's screen. Noise appeared to be controlled well at the mid-to-high sensitivity settings.

The Olympus Stylus 1 is a stylish looking digital camera that features a good 10.7x optical zoom lens, yet is still pocketable, even though the lens is a constant f/2.8. This should give better low light performance, and mean you can take it with you where you wouldn't normally.
