Olympus takes the waterproof point-and-shoot to a new level with the TG-1, which includes a fast f/2 lens that gives it the best low-light performance in its class. It takes very good stills compared to other rugged cameras, along with solid HD video. If its 4x zoom lens isn't long enough, Olympus sells a waterproof teleconverter that bumps it up to almost 7x, along with a fisheye lens for wide-angle shots. On top of that, the TG-1 includes not just GPS but a compass and a manometer to warn you when you're approaching its 40-foot underwater limit. If you need to go deeper, Olympus sells an optional housing that increases its range to 135 feet.

The bottom line: The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS combines a bright lens, a high-sensitivity, high-speed sensor, and some nice extras to make it a top rugged compact camera.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 waterproof digital compact camera looks and feels like it should -- rugged and ready to take on the elements. It's also incredibly fast -- in both the bright f/2.0 lens and in autofocus, startup and shot-to-shot times, but image quality suffers a little more than we'd like,...

We think that the TG-1 is the best tough-cam for all-around usage right now. Anyone shopping for a rugged, waterproof, or otherwise durable camera should give it serious consideration.

We had high expectations from this flagship model, but instead we’re flying the flag half-mast with an extra half star for its specialist users that will find some good from this camera.

While it does lose some points on account of some niggly image quality issues, on the whole it’s one of the best tough cameras on the market.

Looking for a tough cam? Then the TG-1 should be at the top of your list. It’s hard to justify many other comparably priced units which have fewer features and capabilities.

I have had this camera over a month. I pre-ordered and got the camera a few days ahead of the release date. Right out of the box I liked the camera but wanted to wait till after a trip to Disney to really see how it preformed. I shoot almost everything with pro-level Canon bodies and L series...
