A $450 mirrorless cam that fits in your pocket

78

We were skeptical when Samsung first demoed the NX mini, having seen several manufacturers fail to deliver a great camera within a very small package. Pentax's infamous Q was tiny, but it was also spectacularly overpriced and an underperformer across the board, due in no small part to its small sensor and inadequate lenses. Nikon's initial lineup of mirrorless cameras, the V1 and J1, fell short as well. Samsung's NX mini introduction is well-timed, however, with young casual photographers now focused on style and selfies above all else. The NX mini is hardly the most capable mirrorless camera on the market, but at $450 with a lens, it's a very solid buy.

I can see how the style and uniqueness of the NX Mini will find it a pretty solid market of young-folk. But I have a hard time recommending it as something to capture high quality photos with.

The Samsung NX Mini is a compact, Wi-Fi-connected mirrorless camera that runs circles around smartphones, but manual control is a bit of a chore.

Despite high photo quality and sophisticated controls, this selfie-friendly shooter awkwardly straddles the cellphone and 'real' camera worlds.

It’s fair to say we were impressed by the NX Mini. Image performance is particularly good from such a sensor, and although we’d happily sacrifice the selfie feature for a more versatile hinge on the screen, the magnesium body and metal lenses are design highlights.

It doesn't have the fastest autofocus and its small image sensor just can't compete with cameras equipped with the larger Micro Four Thirds sensor and even larger APS-C sensors.

It's not without flaw, with said screen proving a touch under-specified and a few image quality issues, however for those that like to travel light the Samsung NX Mini might well make the shortlist.

A great range of specs in a tiny, and (fairly) low priced, body. A tilting touchscreen makes it the ideal choice for self-portraits.

Samsung gets the cheers for designing an incredibly small interchangeable lens camera, and it’ll fill a niche with select customers, especially the selfie generation. Photographically, it isn’t strong enough to replace cameras with larger sensors.

Ultimately the NX mini is aimed at fashion-conscious, tech-savvy photographers wanting a noticeable boost image quality over a smartphone or compact camera without the bulk of a regular CSC or DSLR.

We spent a few minutes poking around the mini's menu system and taking some sample shots (which we were required to leave behind). The camera performed well, with speedy focusing and accurate exposure (based on reviewing images on the LCD).

The mini is a curious thing. Its Wi-Fi connectivity and flip-up LCD suggest that it's aimed at a socially-driven user, someone who wants concert photos and pictures of friends and isn't too concerned about changing settings.

The NX Mini has great specs for its size: The 1-inch sensor captures pics up to 20.5 megapixels, and it can shoot video in 1080p format at 30 frames per second (H.264). Because of its small size, the controls are closer to a point-and-shoot than a prosumer camera.

When we first picked it up, we were surprised by its lack of mass – its body weighed only 158g (which is the weight of about three cupcakes). It’s also slim enough (22.5mm) to fit into your back pocket.

The image quality is more than I've expected. 1 inch sensor is amazing. Lens are small, body is small and cute. useful when taking snapshots. Supports RAW, and bundled Adobe Lightroom is great!
