The Sigma DP3 Merrill packs a 46-megapixel Foveon image sensor and a fixed 75mm macro lens. It can capture amazing photos, but it's not a camera that will appeal to the masses.

As with its siblings, the DP3 Merrill is an equally slow, cumbersome, rather unrefined and expensive compact camera that's really only suited to static or very patient subjects.

Boxy by design, and slow to autofocus, there are few surprises to revel in here. But the DP3 will attract a specific user base, albeit a niche one, just for that specialised sensor - although we do wish Sigma would give the DP-series a performance kick up the behind.

I walked away quite impressed with the DP3 and I may even be able to get used to shooting at 75mm. It’s a weird focal length though: too long to be normal and too short to be a proper portrait focal length in my opinion.
