Starting with Playstation 2, Sony has shown their desire to infiltrate your living room in many ways possible. Playstation 2 was one of the best DVD player back then. I mean, why would I have multiple boxes doing several things when I can have my gaming console to watch movie as well.
With Playstation 3, Sony put their chip on the line. It was released in the height of the HD-War between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD which as we all know ended for victory on the "Blu" side. As one of the pioneer of Blu-Ray, Sony wants this format to win and their mindset is that how else they can win aside from putting Blu-Ray players in people's living room. How to do this? Well, with the Playstation 3 of course. The Playstation 3 harnesses the storage of Blu-Ray for gaming (more storage, bigger and more files, more details, etc2) and at the same time it was the cheapest and absolute best blu-ray player ever made. It's great because of the upgrade capability. Blu-Ray is a developing format and they introduce new profiles that can do more funky things over the time. PS3, with its firmware upgradeability is wonderful because it will always support the latest and greatest Blu-Ray specification.
I for one, ABHOR first person shooting game and that was why I chose PS2 over XBOX. The PS2 has wonderful RPG titles such as Suikoden, Final Fantasy, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean. Also present was the ever important Metal Gear Solid franchise on the Playstation platform and the wonderful driving simulation of Gran Tourismo. Xbox360, in its early days was swimming in driving, sports, and (the always shitty) shooting games. Lacking the important RPG genre I was looking for. I purchased Xbox360 and got disappointed with their games such as Gears of War (yes I hate it) or Perfect Dark Zero.
Playstation 3 started weak.... upon launch it didn't have the choice of games that I like. Over time, however, it improved a lot. Folklore arrived, MGS4 arrived, Fallout 3 arrived, Valkyria Chronicles arrived, Sirens: Blood Curse arrived, Eternal Sonata arrived. All those games attracted me back to Playstation platform. They are games that I actually enjoy and love playing.
2009 and 2010 will be a great year for Playstation platform as Final Fantasy 13 is coming with tons of other great games such as Gran Tourismo 5. I am still waiting for more RPG genre however but couple games are coming such as White Knight Chronicles (already out in Japan since last year I believe) and this wonderful game called Demon's Souls (one of the best selling RPG games in Japan and this game is "balls-to-the-wall" hard according to all the reviews out there)
Playstation platform has come a long way from PSone until now. It has morphed from a mere gaming console to an actual home entertainment device. You can purchase movies, TV shows, music, and others in Playstation Store. Having said that, they still haven't forgotten the gamers... they still provide great franchises, and a slew of new exclusive franchises on the way (such as Agent from Rockstar). Their tight integration with PSP is also critical for Sony in expanding their console not only for home but outside the house as well
