The Sony Xperia P is a midrange Android smartphone with a sleek, lightweight body, a very good display and a great 8-megapixel camera. However, it runs on an older version of Android, and doesn't have the best battery life. If you're in the US, it's available only as an unlocked version for about $500, which is more than you'd pay for an some better contract-free phones, like the gdgt Must Have Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which is available from Google for about $400.

The Xperia P stands behind the flagship S, but surprises with better build quality and a superbly visible screen. Placed squarely in the middle of Sony's smartphone line-up, its battery woes are the main concern.

If beauty is your only priority, the Sony Xperia P will certainly satisfy, but power isn't this unlocked phone's forte.

The Sony Xperia P is strangely a more compelling device compared with the Xperia S. We found it to be the better handset, especially when it comes to build and battery life. Though the screen resolution is not as high as on the S, the WhiteMagic display works as advertised.

If you're truly smitten with Sony's services, you may be willing to wait for the ICS update. But there are more up-to-date Androids on the mid-range market calling for your cash right now.

Overall the Sony Xperia P is something of a mixed bag ... an update to Android 4 here and the choice application of, erm, apps from Google Play and the Sony Xperia P starts to feel much more appealing.

...an excellent package, and one of few to offer this much in its price range. But you might want to hold off until Sony finally release the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update...when its price will have settled to a lower level and the bang for the buck ratio will have gone sky-high.

The Xperia P has a lot going for it in the arenas of hardware and multimedia prowess... But we’re reviewing the phone as it is, not as it might be with a future software update, and in its current state the Xperia P is a great piece of hardware let down by geriatric software.

Compared to the S, this phone is just as good. The screen is bright and clear, aided by the White Magic technology. The build is stunning, and feels good in the hand, and of course, OK, it is still on android 2.3, but if the S is anything to go by then ICS will be great on this phone. A seriously...
