A high-spec cameraphone without the hump

88

The Z1 ticks all the main boxes for a cutting-edge Android flagship, with superb 20-megapixel stills being an added bonus. However, if you're looking for the very best cameraphone on the market, this isn't it.

The camera, the screen, the processor, the battery life, the build quality -- none of them are market-beaters on their own, but together, in one package, they make a sensible buy for anyone looking for a big-screened, high-spec Android smartphone.

The physical size is chunky ... and the presence of lots of capable competitors out there means the Z1, despite all its positives, doesn't shine as brightly as its spec sheet would suggest.

Much like the Xperia Z, this is a brilliant smartphone not just for sophisticated picture and sound quality that's a cut above most rivals but also as an all-round package.

...the Xperia Z1 is a great addition to the high-end Android stock, all without outperforming the competition. The camera isn't the leap forward Sony says it is, but the overall smartphone experience is nonetheless fun and effective in a stylish, responsive and powerful smartphone.

There’s a lot to this phone, and its high-end credentials are not in doubt. It looks good, feels great in your hand and the Sony speciality of waterproofness remains a key, if gimmicky, feature.

The Sony Xperia Z1 is still one of the best smartphones that we've reviewed, though, and it does run on the more popular Android OS, rather than Windows, which may ultimately sway your decision.

The Xperia Z1 is well built, zippy and responsive, and seems to keep the best bits of the original. Add to that key updates we saw first in the Z Ultra -- all stirred up with that megapixel mania -- and it becomes a tantalizing combination, that's for sure.

It has roughly similar dimensions to the Z, but it's marginally thicker. Although both the Z1 and Samsung Galaxy S4 have 5-inch displays, the Z1 is slightly longer and wider than Samsung's phone. You still won't struggle to cram it into your Levis.

It’s a handsome phone, certainly. Sony used polycarbonate to good effect with the last few models, with the plastic making for a sturdy frame that then had sheets of glass inserted, but the Xperia Z1 steps it up a notch.

At first glance, the Sony Xperia Z1 is an impressive phone. The camera spec alone is enough to tempt a photography enthusiast...and it seems Sony has again served up a smartphone to look- out for and one that can take on the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and Nokia Lumia 1020.

I think Sony has finally done it. It's a shame that they didn't wait and released the inferior Z. I owned the Z so I would know.
