Purdue researchers want tiny refrigerators cooling your PC {Engadget}

Jul 24th 2008 8:19PM Whatever you do, do not (I repeat - DO NOT) download the photo from the Purdue website... the guy in the blue shirt is in the middle of a very bad hair day.

On topic: this type cooling has been around for over 100 years and its predecessor has been around since the 1860s... and it's CARNOT efficiency is about 13-18%... not the best but as the article says it beats air cooled radiant type of heat dissipation.

There are other methods that are "in chip" - cool to about 1 degree C above absolute and convert the thermal gain to electricity but that's a whole nuther topic!

Celebrate Bill Gates Day with us here at Engadget {Engadget}

Jun 27th 2008 1:39AM Unfortunately much of the philanthropic bruhaha of Bill Gates is guilt based (or guilt assuagement based) - he is donating to a health charity in Bhopal because the chemical plant that he has a high stake in is killing the people in the area - but he has not divested himself of the ownership in the still operating facility.

And that is only one of the stories. There are more.

As for Jobs and charities... most charity trackers can only track what has been either given publicly (as in corp. giving) or declared by the giver. As an example, since 1972 my privately held company has given at least 25% of our net profits (and it has been considerable) to quietly assist education and health facilities development in developing countries all over the world. Yet, you have never read about it.

So, before you castigate Steve Jobs for what he has or has not done - look in your own pocket and see how you have helped. There is a saying about glass houses.

I have zero respect for Bill Gates - not because I am a Mac User, but because I have seen what Gates & Co. have done to people who are innovative and present their ideas to M$ and then have their ideas "borrowed" without compensation. When M$ was confronted, the innovators were told "sue us, we have enough money to keep you in court for a long time"...

Everyone is an example in their endeavours in life - some are just bad examples. Just because you are the biggest bully on the block doesn't make you admirable.

My comment to Bill Gates on "Bill Gates Day" is why don't you move to some of the hell holes you have created in the developing countries and see how long you and what's her name will last.

Caio...

Pure Electric Vehicles building a $10k electric car... hopefully {Engadget}

Jun 13th 2008 4:17PM Bubble bursting time:

Electric cars are more polluting then a petrol powered vehicle... Why? You may ask... most electricity (which is what you charge that electric car with - is produced by COAL fired plants. The worst polluting source of power known to man.

However - there is light at the end of the tunnel... literally. There is a process that was developed by the DOE prior to Ronnie Raygun's administration that showed great promise because YOU NEVER BURNED THE COAL! You "extracted" the energy from it. Ronnie and the gang of thieves ever since - no matter the party - has prevented it from being developed. That latent technology has been experimented with further by the Japanese, Koreans and Chinese - some work in India, too.... Hmmm... I wonder why? And actually this process was first discovered in the 1930s. And it works! If you do not know what this process is - thank the military industrial petrochemical complex in your local neighbourhood.

Also - there is a thing called Net Effect - to charge your electric car you need to supply electricity - funny that. Where do you get the juice from? And what is the Net Effect CO2 that you generate to drive your supposedly guilt-free electric car?

The most abundant form of energy in the Universe is not electricity - it is plasma... think about it. The most energy efficient engine you can witness is the sun. And it radiates a plasma stream that - if you could harness it (and research is being done to do that) you could supply the planet with all of the necessary energy forever! (Well, until the sun poofed in about 11 billion or so years)... then you would need to build an electric car.

Jun 13th 2008 3:57PM One thing that people keep forgetting - most especially this bozo - is the net energy effect. How much pollution is being produced to generate the electricity to charge the battery - no matter the source - unless he is using photovoltaic generation.

EVERYTHING else has a net CO2 effect - period. Well, HHO may but to produce usable quantities of HH you need to use electricity - once again net effect.

there are other solutions - this is not one of them. Nice try.

BlackBerry Thunder touchscreen phone in live shot {Engadget}

Jun 8th 2008 1:00PM I remember when iPhone hit the streets (and the rumoured hit the streets) all the nay sayers (RIM, M$, et al) said that the touch screen is a fad and people will still prefer the tactile feel of real buttons.

Hmmmm....
I guess the "real" buttons are still there with the many buttons on the side of this model.

Well, you know, call me a fanboi, but I still prefer my iPhone rather than an iPhoney...

Cheers.
