I like it - so far it's the only iPhone dock I could find that clips all models in one movement and has both sound and charging covered.

I'm looking for an easy hands-free+music solution for my wife's 1st gen iPhone and this may be it...
How about:

"The first samples of Opcuity(TM) Active Layer films were tested in static demonstration units built specifically for determining the performance of the films. These measured greater than 74% pixel efficiency, exceeding the targeted level to achieve maximum uniformity, and thus negatively impacted the uniformity of the test unit. The contrast ratio for a four by four (4x4) industry standard checkerboard pattern measured 140-to-1. The uniformity measured corresponding with the measured pixel efficiency was approximately 80% on one axis and 92% on the other axis. Comparison data measured in the UniPixel lab of a similarly sized LCD unit demonstrated light uniformity of 79% and 95% on its two axes, with a corresponding contrast ratio measure of 63-to-1. "

So it looks to outperform LCD. Pay no mind to the contrast ratio, this is not the number that manufacturers put on their panels. Just look at the comparison: 140:1 versus 63:1.
Not quite - it uses a LED backlight, which could be OLED just as well I guess.

A good explanation of how it works is here:

Basically it replaces the LCD part of a display with MEMS switches that can rapidly switch between opaque and transparent. Combine that with a backlight that quickly cycles between red, green, blue instead of being just white, and you can create any color you like on a full pixel.

It looks like this won't have issues with viewing angle, but the color rotation may cause colored fringes on moving objects. It will be less laggy than LCD with very low on/off times, so movement should look great on it.

Really looking forward to a prototype, this is very interesting!
No, the big lesson is that none of this would have happened if instead of chasing them they would simply have noted down the license plate and appearance of the drivers. No chase, no accidents.
I must say that it is mighty impressive but at the same time, pointless.

Mighty impressive:
- stream 10 minutes of video a day, for a year, on a single CR123 battery
- mesh
- tiny magnetic mount

Pointless:
- 320x160 video at most. You can recognize something happened, but not what or by whom
- requires privacy-busting subscription
- non-rechargeable battery only allows 2.5 days of full-time operation
I'm not so stoked about it. On the face of it, it seems cool, but since you need magnets and since the base shouldn't stick to the phone when you lift it, it will be heavier and therefore more expensive in shipping.

On top of that, what does this improve? Other phones with docks have 0 insertion and removal force, it will just improve "docking" time marginally.

Finally, how does it sync with your computer? Is everything over WiFi? I can live with that :-)

I do hope USB charging is still possible.
> Now, if only the darn thing didn't cost ¥19,800 ($197), we might have ourselves a runaway winner

It's also inexplicably missing touch screen control and Mac support... This could have been a great device, too bad it's not.
Man that looks awesome. I can't wait for decent hardware to run this on! That THC phone just looks clumsy and fat... And I want an on-screen keyboard, no moving parts please.

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am trying to configure out a really dumbed down and intuitive PC for my grandmother. She recently had a stroke and while she is under my care I would like to repurpose a laptop for her to surf and email her children. Anyone have any experience with what input devices and UI's are really understandable for the over 80 crowd?"
