It probably has something to do with the fact that RIM uses their own servers for push mail. The path to the server has to be controlled by the carrier and thus they have to work with the carrier when they are releasing updates that relate to that mechanism. Just a thought.

maybe it's me but I don't see what's so attractive about this. i can only imagine a holy hell of RF interference issues as you move the innards into increasingly different mechanical housings... say you change the ergo, maybe a touch wheel, joystick, d-pad... how is software going to accommodate for something that happens a year down the road?
