According to a, you know, respectable news organization (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8306631.stm), what Sir Berners-Lee actually said about the tree and labour was that the inconvenience of typing the two slashes decreased productivity, thereby saving - not wasting - resources.

It would be nice for your credibility if you reported the news correctly.
