Microsoft takes in $60b, sells 180m Vista licenses since launch {Engadget}
Jul 19th 2008 5:34PM See this is the problem with new media. Engadget (Ryan Block in particular but the whole staff now has serious credibility problems) has been one of the the main purveyors of Microsoft slander and libel over the last year and half, and now they have zero credibility on the topic.
In this article where they are forced to admit they were nearly entirely wrong (the Bush administration of tech reporting if you will), In engadget land, when they print their "retraction" if you will, they fire off one last insult.
Those of you who are being forced to admit that you have been nearly entirely misinformed about Vista should do yourself the favor and find a new blog to haunt.
At least Gizmodo had the fortitude to change course when it became apparent that their initial estimations were wrong.
A real media outlet would fire the editorial staff (which in this case would included everyone at Engadget) after a snafu of this magnitude. The New York Times fired Judy Miller. Engadget should do the same and fire Ryan Block.

Engadget's farewell card to Bill G {Engadget}
Jun 27th 2008 8:14PM So I guess I will take the overwhelming bitterness as sort of a tacit acknowlegment that the Engadget staff knows that Apple will never beat Microsoft.
Do you guys ever regret going into blogging as a career?
Man's Wii Fit experiment comes to an end, 15 pounds shed {Engadget}
Jun 23rd 2008 2:35PM Flashpoint,
I think you expect too much out of people, from his first picture, all that guy would have to do to lose that kind of weight is leave his office chair and drive to the park and sit around and cut his soda pop intake by half. Maybe go for a bike ride a couple times a week???
I know from my own personal workout regimen, I would actually lose performance and gain some fat if I lowered myself to the wii workout...
Also, I think is is still kinda fat to weigh 176 lbs with those chicken legs and biceptless arms. If he is gonna go with that scrawny weakling sort of body structure he still needs to lose another 20lbs an go for a long distance runner look.
And oh look, he discovered that your muscles bulge when you work out and it feels good;) Maybe he isn't hopeless after all?
June 18th: Last day to buy a Dell with XP, penalty free {Engadget}
Jun 16th 2008 9:28AM Wow, big Debian fan here. Recently did a asterisk computer. S#$t F&*k, after I installed Debian, three hours, it took me three hours to figure out that I needed to delete xorg.conf so that x could see my video card and monitor... That was after I failed to manually edit xorg.conf and put the computer into a state where it was trying to launch x, but then failing, so it would try to launch x again. Which kinda sucks, because I never was able to get it to work properly with my kvm switch so I ended up doing it all cli anyhow, and I certainly didn't want to mess with samba after all that, so I did all my editing in vi.
That and asterisk was out of date, so I had to rebuild it. So after apt-get install all the development tools, I was back to ./configure make make install for configure. Well after I installed subversion... because no version I could just download seemed to work so I eventuall had to install the complete build environment.
But all things considered, linux has come a long way since I first started using it 15 years ago. But yeah, its still way off on the horizon for use on the desktop. wayyy wayyy off, naw, is never gonna happen, it will be what it is now, forever. A curiosity for computer nerds.
So yeah a one off linux computer install is very nearly beyond the capabilities of a "linux expert", but yeah, other than that its starting to get not total suckage in that capacity...
PS3 Grand Theft Auto IV is 640p, nobody cares {Joystiq}
Apr 30th 2008 11:21AM cc123,
And once again, why do i feel like i am repeating myself... This games graphics are UGLY from any computer graphics critic perspective. They are horribly blurry and muddy, on BOTH versions. They are only good in that they convey the game. GOW, Bioshock and and Uncharted all have graphics that were MUCH better than this game.
But congrats man, YAY!!!, the PS3 with much hair splitting has the prettiest version of what will be one of this years ugliest games!!!!! You go ahead and enjoy that while it lasts.

Apr 30th 2008 10:59AM cc123,
I find all notions of "better" utterly irrelevant until there is some sort of ABX testing done on it on a sample population that is not savvy to the particulars of each platform. Having seen both versions on an HDTV now, to describe the graphics of this game as anything other than... good enough, is to be overly generous IMO. Both versions suffer from what Rockstar was trying to accomplish compared to what they could have accomplished if both consoles were not severely limited in the way 3-4 year old computer technology is inherently limited.
The PS3 getting the "better" looking version of this game is a phyrric victory... And it is sort of ironic that the SDF hordes on the internet don't seem to get that...

Apr 30th 2008 10:50AM Back in the day of nearest neighbor scaling algorithms, yes, but I don't think I have seen a nearest neighbor scaler in anything but MS Paint for about 10 years?
Rumor: Microsoft has Wii-mote copycat coming {Xbox 360 Fanboy}
Apr 7th 2008 8:42PM Screw the party games. Forget the motion control. With an IR camera they can give us a pointer interface. A simple patch to games, and all the sudden all of the FPS games (thats all it does you know!) are even better. Sell a million of the controls at $60 a pop at Target, and Sonys got nuthin... Well they still have Blu-ray, but I still don't care about that.
Rumor: Microsoft has Wii-mote copycat coming {Xbox 360 Fanboy}
Apr 7th 2008 8:19PM They could skip motion and just add an IR camera to the game pad, and accomplish the same thing and still have a functional game pad, unlike the wii mote and nunchuck combo. Then all the sudden the game pad has that mouse input that is so appealing, and doesn't have the motion detection that IMO is worse than useless.
