Not everyone pays attention to those crosswalk signs, some do have those countdown timers now though but even then I suspect people don't realize it.

naturalyshocked, I don't think this will help people who don't notice the light has changed. Usually they're too caught up with their cell phones or other gizmos. Also you can usually see the cross-traffic signals to anticipate when the signal will change, but I'm not sure many pay attention to that either. I don't think this is being conservative, I just don't see how this could make things better when the people who this is supposed to help weren't likely paying attention to begin with. I'd rather have better public transport to get some people off the roads than spend money on new traffic signals (unless it's for an upgrade to LED lights).
This is an awful idea.. Can you imagine the amount of red light related accidents that would happen with these lights? Yeah, I know, you're supposed to make sure the intersection is clear before going, but seriously now, I think you'd find that there are a lot of people who don't do that and now if they're given a countdown for when to step on the pedal... ugh.

A more useful thing would perhaps be a green/yellow timer.
This is just tremendous.
Josh and the gang are so Tremendous(tm) that I'm borrowing WiFi from the wonderful linksys folks so I can watch this on the subway!
Pretty sure I'm not going to win, but hey, what the hell!
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm pretty much a complete noob when it comes to camera stuff. My wife loves to take pictures, though. So much so that she literally wore out her first point and shoot camera, and the Kodak Z712 I bought for her less than two years ago is starting to act up as well. To compound the matter, we are expecting our first born sometime next year. I fear the Kodak just isn't going to cut it any longer. What would be the best starter DSLR to get? She hates missing photo opportunities due to camera 'lag' so speed would definitely be at the top of the list. Photo quality and features would be next. Price should be no more than $800. I'm not interested in video capabilities."
